Let me know when & I'll be there w/ help!

Really? Saturday AM. I'll make super burgers.

ARRRRGGGG! We'll still be in Sedona Saturday.

Hmmm... How does this sound...

"Tammy, what do you think about leaving our little vacation early so I can help Meg put up her chicken coop?"

Oh. My. Gosh!!!!!!!!!!!!

She is so flippin' cute it should almost be a crime!!!!

Wow....I have been looking up Seramas quite a bit over the past month or two...I think I am losing the battle. They are taking away my will to not have more chickens....It's not my fault....really. It's the Serama's fault....I mean....why should anything have that cute size and posture?? How could a reasonable person resist such a cuteness onslaught?!?!

Ahhh....but with the way our yard is, we really couldn't keep them separate (or safe) from the 'big girls.' So.....they'd have to be in the house.

What can I do in the face of such odds???

Oh, silly! You don't need a separate place for them! We have big girls too. We do have a little coop for them (like 4 feet wide, 3 or 4 feet deep) that we built for them. During the day, the big hen coop and the Serama coop are open though, and they share the run. What happens is ... 8 full size chickens cram themselves into the Serama coop, because it must be better than their coop! Then the 5 Seramas end up hanging in the big coop. They do "flock" together though and hold their own when treats are being handed out. It's the cutest thing to watch Elvis presiding over all of the hens when they graze on the grass. The only reason I think we still even need a little coop is so they have their own nest box, and the big girls have their nest boxes. Although sometimes they still do go in each others boxes.

Today though, I have FOUR broody Seramas ... all in the same nest box. Elvis must have decided there was too much estrogen in the coop because he put himself to bed in the big chicken coop for the first time ever! Probably because he didn't have any hens to stand next to on the roost, since they're all in the nest box. Almost gave me a heart attack though when I went out to bring him in for the night and he wasn't where he belongs!

Here they were all grazing and one of the dogs came over to see if the "gate" was open, so they had to go check it out.

I should have babies again soon, some are in lockdown. Or Amy Bullock is here in AZ and she has Seramas for sale sometimes ... she is one of the SCNA judges. When I got mine I got three from her, and 2 others from 2 different breeders across town.

Doh! I didn't pay attention to Megs post ... I thought you would be shopping for chickens. Much more fun and then you can combine shopping with chickens ... maybe DW won't even notice.

I'll trade you one of my beautiful Wheaton Americauna 9 or 10 week pullet for a FBCM pullet. Interested? Oh and what age are they?

They are still itty bitty, hatched on July 21st, no idea if girls or boys, but if you want them once I have a friend to keep Phyllis company you can have them. I'm full in the big chicken department.

Oh Nurseshelly, you are *so* not helping the situation any

What were people saying about enabling on here again!?

I would love to have them, but I'm just worried...our 13 Ladies all coop and free range together, all day. We just have a big back yard, with a pool and a koi pond, so no separate run for chickens-only. We have 2 big girls and all the rest are bantams. One of the big girls can get nasty with the bantams on occasion (other than the one that is her age/peer). I just wouldn't want anyone to get hurt or be ostracized
sad.png
We don't have any roos so no one other than me or my husband to give the bully the 'smackdown' when she needs it.... Do you think they'd be ok in a completely open yard environment?

I'd love to see seramas in action sometime, especially interacting with other chickens of bigger sizes. YouTube is great, but I think I've seen all the Serama videos already

I think they would do fine

The only reasons we have our side yard fenced to keep the chickens on that side are 1) chicken poop - don't want on our porch, and 2) have a big lab that might try to eat a chicken, so there is a pool fence, and then also the other fence by the pen to keep him out in case he accidentally gets on the pool side of the yard. We still need to attach that side to the shed though so it's more of a visual barrier than a solid one.

ca, that pic of the three hens in a box made me laugh! It's so true, we can provide all the boxes they need, yet they all want the same one!

nurseshelly, Phyllis is SOOOO cute!

Are the Serama roosters very loud?

pdx2phx, my resistance to seramas is seriously taking a beating too! Why are tiny chickens so cute?
Mikey D, it's not just your vacation, but your anniversary too?

Yep, resistance is futile.
pimachickens, Somebody had to say it!

mclevinson, if I lived closer, I'd be there to help in a heartbeat.

I have to say to everyone, it's so nice to come on here and have my spirits lifted. You guys always make me laugh. Thanks.

Sounds like your Honey Do list will be getting bigger and harder, that's what it sounds like to me!
Waaaa. I wanted to get it done before the 6th when I have to head out for testing with DD#2 in Cali. Such a pain and mess having the 8 juvies in cages. I kave to be home to put the shade screen down for afternoon sun and put ice packs in for them to cool off with and ice in their waterers. Chicken math has done me in. I'm going to do all the prep work for roof support today if I can. Whoops, Dr. appt at 10 in Ahwatukee. Tried hiring a guy at Higley Feeds and one at Lowes, no dice.
"S'cuse me while I go have a little pity party over my coffee.

There. All better. I am woman, I can do this; I'm just lazy and I want help with the lifting. I'll be unbearably smug if I do it all myself.
