I don't have roof rats, I might have Pack Rats. The rodent that I am having problems with, makes pretty big holes. They Have a tunnel system, that would rival NY City Sewer system tunneling. There is a whole colony using and living there. I have new holes inside the pen every day. I have tried Moth Balls down the holes. They block the hole where the moth ball is and dig around it, kicking the moth ball to the top of the ground. I need to go to AZ. Fish and Game web page and look at pics again. Does anyone have any ideas how to keep them out of the pen.

Hi everyone. Boy oh boy we need some rain. Any one getting any around the valley or higher up?

No rain up north it was trying yesterday and didn't. I wish that it would. It is much cooler out.

Mahonri---cant wait to see pictures of your new bird....and the girlfriends too. Hope that he is doing well

About 15 min. ago I was out checking on all my kids, when I thought a bird had flown past and pee on my head. I looked up and a great big black cloud was over head. Down came the five min. rain. 5 drops, 5" apart for 5 min. Very overcast out here. 58 degrees right know. I want to put my baby kids out in their coop and pen. I don't have any heat out there for them. They didn't get to go out yesterday. Had to make a trip to the city and it was a little windy, and no sun on the area. Worried Mom. They sure let me know they wanted out. I am glad that I did get the little roost bar up for them in the brooder/coop. They jumped up on it right away. Not as much fun as their outside digs. I want to move the playhouse out in the sunny area. Where it is now is more of a summer place, plenty of shade. I can move it back when it gets hot.For now I need the sun for them.

We had some drizzles around 4 am. The yard even looked wet.

I had the chickies out and noticed they all disapeared. There was a young hawk in the yard! I cJased it off, it flew back around once then left. Nobody is missing, but I spent all morning outside until the rat-pigeons showed back up.

WELL- I have a sick pullet. See my link and let me know if you have any ideas. No one has seemed "sick" except for the one pullet 6 weeks ago. Now this new one, except it seems different. I am worried. I keep a close eye on everyone's health--- so why can't I figure this out? I went through all the disease websites, and none of my birds symptoms seem severe enough to fit one thing, nor do they have the multiple symptoms (ie- lethargy and swelling).

EDITED: Stupid hawk was back, and there were TONS of pigeons and starling-type birds on the power lines. HEY HAWK-- do me a favor and take an easy rat-bird meal!!! All chooks now locked up. Grrrr. He sure is pretty, though.

we are so sad, we did not get that property in Mesa near QC...so now we are looking at other places in the east valley south of the 202 in every city. There is chandler, mesa, Gilbert,QC and they all have rules i am sure about chickens....so everyone....what do you know about these cities and animals or chickens....i try to look up the city then the land use but some how I get lost...if anyone can point me the right direction or knows what the laws are for these places could you clue me in...each time we look we wonder, how much land is needed, what the city says for this and that and it gets confusing....anyway I told my daughter I would ask the pro's our Chicken Forum....

Oh what an exciting day! We got our first eggs from our 5 Red Star girls today. Two beautiful brown eggs. My kids and I were dancing around and calling everyone we knew. Just had to post here too, to share it with people who understand the excitement of an event like this!

DM you can go on the websites of each city/town and look under animals and then livesotck. They all post restrictions/requirements. I know you csan have poultry in Gilbert. There are basic housing and requirements on how often to clean the coop and how to dispose of dropings in fly tight containers but realy very basic. Most of all you need to see what the CC&R's are if any in the area you want to purchase.

Anyone still up that can help me out tonight. I have 7 week old chicks that have been staying outside at night for the last few days, but now that the temperature is even colder (supposed to be 48 tonight), do I need to bring them back inside? Can 7 week old chicks (fully feathered) stay outside in 40+ degree weather?

I did bring in the frizzle (pictured) & silkies because they just don't seem as warmly feathered, but the rest of the chicks are just as feathered out as the grey ones in the photo.
