Well, if DH asked I'd say "Four laying hens and some pullets". If he persisted I'd say "Wheaton Americaunas, Speckled Sussex and Silkies". If he was doggedly determined for better info I'd say "One of the Silkies is actually a Sizzle, the ones with the curly feather gene
and the fluffy feathery gene? You know the difference? Its really cool because when you cross a Frizzle with a Silkie and maybe throw a little extra Polish in..." at this point he might be expected to slip into a coma. Should his blood sugar level remain sufficient to maintain consciousness, I might tell him "I have 8. But some are for sale". I WOULD, however, refrain from mentioning that the only ones for sale are the ones that spontaneously change sex.
I used to know someone on another forum who named al her birds of a specific breed one name. So, for example, all the silkies would be Dora and all the sizzles Tempest, and all the plymouth rocks would be Gneissly, and all the leghorns would be Foggy, etc. So when asked how many she had, she would start naming them: weel, there's Dora and Tempest and...
Her meat bird pens were given the same name as her local grocery store, so she could go to "Bashas" to get chicken for dinner. Saved arguing and tears from her daughter. (Of course I don't eat any chicken
"Chickens are our friends, not our food.")
