I want to go to the fair, too. I think my kids would love it. I have never been to the fair before, rides make me sick. But I'd love to see the chickens! Does anyone here exhibit their birds?

110 in my back yard and no rain in sight. Wish I could fit all of my birds into the coop with AC. Those birds are LOVING it.
5 eggs today. 2 Marans, 2 Ameraucanas and 1 polish.

Gallo,
it was very unnerving. I will feel great once they all make it to adulthood and I can use them for breeding

(until then I am a trembling nervous wreck). If you want to know the whole story, it's on my website: http://www.widgetcreekranch.com/import.html. Hope this info can be useful to somebody...

I hope I can buy some of those nice fertile eggs from you someday next fall. Looks like a really nice meat breed!

Hi,
I'm sure if you call around you will find some feed stores that carry what you want. Higley Feed in Gilbert has organic feed but I don't know if that is near or far for you. I feed flax seeds (whole), or ground flax that is specifically for increasing omega content in eggs. They don't like the ground flax as much as the whole flax seeds though, so I think I won't buy that again. I'll just go to sprouts and get the bulk flax again. I also give them lots of greens, mostly weeds or grape leaves.

Broadway Feeds sells whole flax in big bags. I feed it to my horses. It's cheaper than sunflower seeds, too.

im glad to know those clovers and fescue grow for you. I'm planning to plant a mixture this year in the shade. I'm also planting annual clover and rye over my Bermuda in the sun for the chickens.
I was also planning to grow chia this fall for chicken food. Heard it grows like weeds around here!
Anyone ever tried growing medic? It looks it could be a very good ground cover legume for chickens.
I'm also planning to plant some fenugreek this fall. I have a couple pounds of it, bought it from a spice shop online and the baby chicks love it for sprouts. It's a legume so very high in protein. Used for alternative cool weather hay in the Middle East.

Well, if DH asked I'd say "Four laying hens and some pullets". If he persisted I'd say "Wheaton Americaunas, Speckled Sussex and Silkies". If he was doggedly determined for better info I'd say "One of the Silkies is actually a Sizzle, the ones with the curly feather gene and the fluffy feathery gene? You know the difference? Its really cool because when you cross a Frizzle with a Silkie and maybe throw a little extra Polish in..." at this point he might be expected to slip into a coma. Should his blood sugar level remain sufficient to maintain consciousness, I might tell him "I have 8. But some are for sale". I WOULD, however, refrain from mentioning that the only ones for sale are the ones that spontaneously change sex.

I used to know someone on another forum who named al her birds of a specific breed one name. So, for example, all the silkies would be Dora and all the sizzles Tempest, and all the plymouth rocks would be Gneissly, and all the leghorns would be Foggy, etc. So when asked how many she had, she would start naming them: weel, there's Dora and Tempest and...

Her meat bird pens were given the same name as her local grocery store, so she could go to "Bashas" to get chicken for dinner. Saved arguing and tears from her daughter. (Of course I don't eat any chicken

Oh. Ick. POOR thing. Hope she'll be okay?

I'm hot and I want a shower. I dare not, 'cause DD's 2 & 3 are on a tear today. DH at work training a newbie.

Everyone get on their swimsuit and hop into a communal shower. Be sure to bring some bath toys for the kids.
