Arizona Chickens

Domestic pets, puh! I'd much rather my neighbors had chickens instead of the dogs and cats they let run willy nilly without cleaning up after them, leaving droppings EVERYWHERE. I can't even let my son play at the playground because the cats use it as their giant litterbox. Nothing against dogs or cats, I love both. It's the lack of responsibility people take for their animals and this idea that because chickens are considered farm animals they must be dirtier than the standard pet. In this economy I'd think people would be more understanding about having chickens. Where dogs and cats (cats being questionable here) provide companionship, chickens provide that plus eggs and meat. My husband doesn't like animals much, but he would be happy to have chickens because they're actually useful. Whatever happened to the "wild west"? You'd think chickens would be as common as desert landscaping.

I saw that letter about the County Island. Wasn't it on the Phoenix Permaculture forum? Very scary to think the County Islands can do that, just because they forgot to be specific about chickens in their guidelines.
I'm sooo sorry about this. If there is anything I can do to help. I hate HOAs! I stayed with my parents part-time while working in remote areas and going through a divorce for two years. They live in an HOA near Desert Ridge. It was such a hassle because I couldn't even park my truck on the street. I ended up driving my dad's Honda and parking my truck where I was boarding my horses. Stupid, you can't even drive the vehicle of your choice if it happens to be a dually, just because it doesn't fit in the garage? That would really not go over in TX or OK. The vehicle of choice is a dually pickup!

Anybody have Speckled Sussexs? How are they in the heat? Are the hatchery hens really 5 pounds or are they smaller? How are they for laying? What shade of brown are their eggs?
Still trying to decide between red sex-links, naked necks, or something else for a brown egg layer. What about the Welsummer? Are they terribly big? Do they really have dark brown eggs? Do they lay well?
So, here's what I really want: a chicken the size of my buttercup or silver leghorn ( very small full-sized fowl), very heat tolerant, not broody ( I already have plenty of those!), good layer of brown eggs, darker the better.
Not too much to ask?
Can I just feed my buttercups and silver leghorns something to make their eggs brown? Just kidding!

Just noticed the Australorps are supposed to be smaller than the Speckled Sussex. Does anyone have both or either? Can you give me information on them? Again, I want a smaller, brown egg layer. Would the red sex linked be smaller than either one? I love the color of the SS but really don't want a 7 pound hen.
I prefer 3 pound hens, although I'm sure the brown egg layers are going to probably be bigger.

Tracydr I've got 2 speckled sussex and they've done fine so far in the heat, by fine I guess I mean they are surviving. I'm guessing mine are hatchery stock, bought them from a guy here in mesa but he had way to many breeds the same age for them to have been from his own stock. I'd say they are right around 5 lbs, look the same size as my RIRs. I'm not sure about they're laying, I'm horrible about telling each hens eggs apart from one another but i get a lot of the light brown ones.

facing some financial difficulties for listening to
my fathers decisions we ended with many hens
and roosters because we took to many eggs to hatched
but have not been able to find any people
to sell them to we post them on craigslist but
people never show up

I do not think any of my gals weigh 7 pounds. They are all about the same height, give or take a little. All of my gals are hatchery. I know my Gold Laced Wyandotte only weighs in at 4 lbs ( the vet weighed her) All my gals seem to be doing well with the heat.
My Australorp (back right) is bigger than my Welsummer (back left) and my Speckled Sussex (in front of the Welsummer) My Black Sex-Link is in back middle and my Delaware is the only white one
