I'm adding 4 to my current flock of 4. I'd like some ideas from anyone about a temporary grow-out brooder. I've read page after page of the brooder thread but there wasn't much on larger ones that suited my situation. They'll be in the house for the first 4 weeks or so then they'll only be in it for 8-12 weeks. I'd like something cheap and temporary that I can put next to my house that I won't feel bad about getting rid of. Not tons of room. I've thought of:

a small frame made with free pallets or 2 x 2 cull lumber and chicken wire (prefer not to buy hardware cloth due to it's expense)

used crib surrounded with chicken wire, maybe cutting the legs off so it sits directly on the ground and covering the top with something; not sure if this would be big enough; they're around 55" x 34"

Just how big do I need to make it for the 2-3 months they'll be in it before they move in with the big girls?

Hi Meg!!! We should do coffee, or something while the kids are all in school

Might do better with a when kids are in school, since I'm sleep deprived at the moment.
DS has been really high on the AH meter last week ... doing a lot better this week

I use a 50 gallon rubber maid to start (either inside or on the porch), and then switch to an extra large wire dog kennel for older chicks. It was one we just had in our garage and were not using though. I bet you could get free pallets, and use them to make a pen really inexpensively. There are almost always pallets on Craigslist in the free section.

Phew.DD2 is driving me absolutely bonkers right now, Sarah being pretty amazing. Love the AH meter, it may save young lives by injecting .05 cc's of humor into the day.

Is there enough room in the kennel until they're old enough to be integrated? I decided to put mine in a plastic kennel that fits our shepherd but it won't be big enough for more than a few weeks.

I'm so temped to add these to the chicks we're getting next week.
Can you tell me more about them? They'll be small, right? Can they live with the big girls? Do you have any idea what they'll look like?

It depends on how big it is. I have had 4 chicks in mine until 12 weeks before. I added a branch as a perch to keep them off of the food and water when they were older too (helped a lot!). My kennel is the 42 inches long by 28 inches wide one.
