Thanks everyone for the help. A pressure washer wouldn't have worked, unfortunately. There was 1" thick hardened glue that needed to be removed. I did not cut the side, as per all the advice here. What I ended up doing was cutting a half circle shape in the top where it didn't interfere with where the metal rods go through. By doing this I created a flap that I could slip through without actually removing anything or creating a hole. Actually, "slipping through" isn't really accurate. It was really more of a shimmy, shimmy, wiggle, scrape, twist, oh that's gonna leave a mark on my back, twist, shimmy. Apparently my idea of my half circle size and my true size are slightly different. But whatever. It actually peeled off pretty easily once I got inside. Tomorrow I will weld the slit back together, and probably bolt a plastic plate over that also to lessen the stress on the seam. Getting out was even funnier. I had taken the barrel out of the metal casing so it was easier to move, which means there wasn't any weight to it, which caused my weight to topple it upon climbing out. I almost landed on my head, and kinda looked like I was trying to do a cartwheel with a 4' cube attached to my butt.

I'm impressed he did the work too! That's great! Not enough kids these days would do that! I love doing stuff like that and my son does too. Boy, you should see my dads woodshop! I come by it honestly.

Hubby is proud Jace hasn't burned the school down in welding so far.

We ordered from Ideal. I almost ordered with Tracy and Mikey but I was worried that our similar looking chicks would not be labeled and get mixed up.

So you are worried about the red broilers and production reds?
They will probably be a little different and since you got a different number of each (8 red broilers and 4 production reds), you'll probably know which is which.

I was sitting by the brooder tonight trying to get the temperature right before the chicks arrive. My husband walked by and asked me if I was practicing sitting with the chicks.

Well, if you haven't had chicks before you might want to practice sitting there too. You'll be doing it a lot over the next few weeks.

Excellent idea. As the brooder (read Tupperware tote) is in the bathtub, there it a convenient chair height seat right next to it!
