Also, I would be careful using hay for the chicks until they are older. They might eat too much of it.

Tell that to the residents of Kauai and Florida, both of which have large feral chicken populations. In much of the 3rd world the domesticated chicken is still left pretty much to forage and care for itself and offspring.

Yup - first ones ever. Hopefully the setup is adequate, I keep hearing horror stories about losing chicks. At the onset of the chicken adventure I told Tammy we should get a few extras as most folks say to plan on losing a couple. At this point I don't want to loose any!

I guess I was just distinguishing between wild and feral. Some feral animals can survive in the wild but they weren't wild to begin with, at least, in their current form.

I use cheep (!) paper towels...roll em up and toss em in the compost. Quick and easy. In two weeks they stet scratching em up and I change to fine shavings from Mesa Feeds.
