Arizona Chickens

Mikey:
Very cute! they look a lot like mine.

My daughter held each one until it fell asleep in her hand last night.

Tracy and Mikey: I talked to Ideal (because I can't let things go and I had to know) and they said to check the chicks' bellies and under their neck for markings. If they don't have anything they should be OK on starter feed for the first 10 days. After that they need broiler food. They'll start to grow more and you should see a difference by then. They look too much alike to tell the difference at this age.
They also said the Cornish should be on broiler feed now.

edited to add: P.S. you might want to call them and tell them what happened so they can correct it in the future. She says it depends on who is boxing your order. It sounds like one of the boxers needs some direction.

I do not know what it costs but there are a multitude of feed stores in and around Mesa. Higley feeds (Williamsfield just west of Higley) B-B (Ironwood just south of Apache) Superstition (Idaho just south of University)

Good luck!

I know Mesa Feed Barn has hay.

Oh, no! Those are so precious, to lose old jars like that! Did you prewarm the?
I put them in the water bath when I'm just starting the water boiling, before filling the jars. If I'm pressure canning, I put the jars in the oven and put the oven on 225 for half an hour. Was the applesauce boiling when you filled the jars?
Did you pressure can or boiling water bath it? For those old jars, I'd probably boiling water bath it, just to be on the safe side, since you can do either with applesauce.

Is it still bleeding? a little septic stick or powder will stop the bleeding, or cornstarch. next time just leave it or if it needs off, twist. Icky I know, but yeah.

She seems to be fine now. Sorry, I panicked a little. (why isn't there an "embarrassed" smiley?)

There was only one drop of blood. I wiped it off with a paper towel and put a tiny bit of bacitracin on it and it seemed to stop completely.
I just seemed to remember reading something about if you pull off the umbilical, the chick is doomed.
Of course, I did it just as I had to run out the door and I didn't have time to do a search.

I'm down to 6 chicks now. I delivered 4 to my friend who ordered with me and 3 to Tracy.

I'll try to get pictures tomorrow, but it's another busy day. I'm sure I'll be able to do it Saturday at the latest.
In the meantime, this is a fun thread: I posted Daisy pictures. (she's an Ideal 236, our favorite right now)

My hay guy is $13.50 a bale right now. Hay is high all across the country right now, due to drought, the Japan thing, price of cotton, the cool weather on the west coast, floods in the Midwest and the north, and mid east buying all of our hay. It's crazy! Hay commodities and cotton prices have driven the prices through the roof. Last year and the year before, hay farmers tore up alfalfa fields and put in cotton. Then, alfalfa on the west coast failed due to flooding, drought in TX and OK, fires across AZ and NM caused farmers to need more, everything has come together for the perfect storm. There was a time this winter that we couldn't even find alfalfa, right here in " the alfalfa capital" even though they were cutting it!
I need to buy it for four horses and prices are literally double last summers costs. It's really killing me!

My Cornish chicks seem kind of sleepy compared to the others. I wonder if they are hatched at a different hatchery? I know Welp drop-ships theirs. I lost two Cornish during the night, one that was screaming from the time he arrived and another. All the other chicks look great but a little worried about the Cornish. Mikey, are your Cornish looking ok? Everybody else doing well?
All my reds and the silky are running around looking awesome.

Speaking of canning, I'm going to try this for the first time. I want to make the pomegranate jelly from the recipe TT! posted a while ago. I'm planning on the water bath method, I don't own a pressure canner. Sooooo....can I place the jars directly in the pot or do I have to have that basket thingy to place them in so they dont sit directly on the bottom?
