One still has a bit of green.
Mikey, that's very strange that the suspected broiler is smaller than the production red " Pullets". You would think layer Pullets would be the smallest in the group. Now I'm very confused. I have a bunch of lighter colored, big red ones with large feet, I think are obviously broilers. Than, some smaller ones, smaller bones, darker red ones that I would suspect are layers.
What a mess!
To make it even more confusing, Ideal sent me my replacement Cornish and silky ( actually, I added a couple silky for extra insurance, since it's for the granddaughter) and a bunch of red packing peanuts. I think there is even a bantam sized red packing peanut! The only red bantam possibilities I can even come up with would be bantam rhode island red or white laced Cornish. Or, a really runty full-sized chick.
Whatever, I now have a lot-a-lot of chicks!

OK - size comparison:

Production red is a bit bigger than the red broiler. Almost visible in the pictures, very apparent in you hands.

Cornish is huge!

Mikey,
I'm sure you are right about the production red. That's exactly how mine look right now.
I think the PRs were bred to mature quickly so they can start producing sooner. I guess that's why they grow up fast. My PRs have way more feathers than my GSLs or BAs.

Janetora and whitequeen1492,
welcome-byc.gif
and the Az thread!

Do those of you with exterior nest boxes have a problem with them heating up too much? I didn't add external nest boxes because I was worried about that.

Mikey D, It looks great! I think you have a great plan and I can't wait to see it finished.

AZBootsie, WOW!

Those were the first pics I've seen of your coop and it is fantastic! And now you're building a matching duplex!?!?

You must keep us updated. I just love the paint job too. Well done!

Beckyhsinglsc, my nest boxes are on the north side of the coop and they do get hit with sun in the late afternoon/early evening. When that happens, they turn into mini ovens. Ok, maybe not that bad, but certainly hotter than the interior of the coop. It's enough that next spring we're going to plant another grape vine just north of the coop and train the vines to travel back over the coop and provide cover for the nest boxes and the coop itself. I also like your idea of everyone putting their coops on their byc pages. I got so many of my initial ideas and information that way when I built my coop. I remember thinking at the time that I wished there were more to see.

tightwad and RanchoDelPolloLoco, I wondered what room looked out onto Mikey's coop too! I was imagining it was the dining room and all the other chickens watching as the Mikey D family feasted on one of his meaties. There's a Gary Larson cartoon in there somewhere.

janetora and whitequeen1492,

and welcome to our AZ thread! We love to have new people aboard.

That's my only concern.

Mine will be on the east end of the coop so it won't get the hard afternoon sun, just the hard morning sun

.

It seems to be working for Gallo though...

***Edited 'cause I read Gallo's response after I posted a request for it. Do I have to start reading this thread backwards now?***

I just looked at it again (and am editing this post for the fourth time!) and if needed I could build "eaves" under the balcony. Not sure how that would work though. I do like the grape vine idea very much!

Oh my gosh, I don't get online for just a few days and I'm WAY behind! Not even going to try to catch up. I had a nasty cold/virus/something I was trying to kick, busy with kids, planting, dealing with inlaws, went on DATE NIGHT, the cabbage worms attacks my garden, the mice moved in, we caught 3 last night, take mom to weekly chemo.......I guess that's it!

Ok, I'm totally game for this.

I often think the same thing about seeing everyone's coops & chickens. Plus it gives me ideas on what I could do better for my girls. I'll take pics this weekend when I'm moving my stinky chicks outside to their grow-out brooder crib. Literally, a crib!
