I don't know if the law has been changed, but in the county it was no shooing within 1/4 mi. of an occupied structure. I do have neighbors on the south end of the property that would be well within that distance.

re: coop There are 2 of them, just basically big boxes, 8'X20', 8' high wall on one side, 10' high on the other. Icelandics like to roost high, and I'd like to get them used to roosting in the henhouse instead of ON the AZ room or in the trees.

So I am upstairs, we just finished putting the clean laundry away ('cause putting dirty laundry away is counter productive) and I ask my beloved if she thinks milling a slot and putting an acrylic window (to check feed level) in the chicken feeder to be, would be a good idea.

She responded in the affirmative and I asked if that wouldn't be going "overboard"? She said no a visual indicator of feed level is a good idea.

I thought about it for a minute and then said, "I guess overboard was reached a while ago, huh?"

She again said no, while we spend quite a bit more than we thought we would, the coop doesn't look over the top.

I said, "So it doesn't look like we spent $750 on it. (Yep, that's the # she came up with)

She said no that's not what she meant. "It looks like a good, well built coop, (here comes the funny part) not like one of those "pansy" ones you showed me online."

That's why I love her so much!

Had I been drinking anything, I'd'a painted the walls! After I stopped laughing, I had to put a robe on, go downstairs and post this.

She was afraid some of Ya'll would get angry if I posted this, I told her no, they're good people who don't get angry, they'll just laugh. (So don't get angry!)

That's awesome! 2 twenty foot long coops! I can't wait to see em!

I'm pretty sure you are correct on the 1/4 mile thing. A shotgun is prolly better than a 45.

And now back to the chicken thing.

With multiple animals able to benefit from meal worms, we've pretty much decided to start a colony.

They are pretty inexpensive off of ebay:

Ebay meal worm linkey

But do any of ya'll have any experience with "super worms" They are giant, 2" long meal worms

Ebay Super Worm linkey

They are more than 2x the size of regulars and if they are better I don't mind the extra $ for the start up cost.

This is not necessarily the supplier I was going to use, just a handy one for comparison. Most of them will sell 1000 for $14 shipped live.

Bob's Henhouse :

SouthernDesert, is it legal for a resident to shoot a javelina if it's marauding on their property? Just curious, I don't have health ins. and really don't want to risk the expense of rabies shots. I hope your neighbor gets better quick. That is just plain scary.

pastrymama, pdx2phx had other calls on her as well, I just got lucky.

If she and the sultan roo get along, I may have hatching eggs. They are pretty cute.

Mikey, do y'all deliver?

Howdy Bob,

No it is not legal and when I contacted the Fish and Game folks they relayed that to me and explained that Javalina are considered big game animals and are protected (we are not apparently) and the best idea they had for me was to get a high power squirt gun and spray ammonia at them....

Big time fine for using other methods including pellet gun therapy.

Now it is two months later and someone is injured and they have shot one of the Javelina anyway....
