Are there any really good website about candling eggs...with pictures? I candled the eggs this morning & there are some that have very obvious veins, but there are a few that I'm not sure about. Was wanting to get more info before I take them out of incubator...but I really don't want rotten eggs exploding in my new fancy frigabator

I set them on the 17th...so we're at day 8...I think.

My kids are going crazy waiting for these chickies to hatch. They started with the "are they ready to hatch yet?" on about day 4

When going outside to feed/water/check on the chickens, even though it is cool out and you want to let the cool breeze blow through the house, DON'T leave the door open or a white leghorn may sneak inside and feast on one of your totes of mealworms!

So true! Every once in awhile when I let the dogs in one of my leghorns will trick me and just walk in with the dogs. I'm usually not paying enough attention to notice.
Sometimes she'll stand at the door to be let in (like the dogs do) and I almost let her in. She seems to know when I'm distracted.

Can you just imagine having to sit next to someone traveling with a longcrower or other really loud, obnoxious rooster? For, let's say a four hour flight. Imagine if the plane broke on the tarmac and you had to sit there in the heat for 2-3 hours before taking off.
Can you say headache?

I have flown with obnoxious childen and their oblivious parents - I'll take a rooster any time.

How old are your kids?
I think I'm worse than them! That's why I candled on day 3 !

And I thought I was a patient person after years of gardening. I was told once that gardening would teach a person patience. Well, it wasn't enough!

My dad always said a chicken was dumb enough to drown in the rain staring at the sky...

They seem pretty smart to me if they know enough to sneak in with the dog!

I changed out the bulb for a 40watt instead of 60, but I am still getting temp swings. Not as bad...between 98 & 103 (better than the 92-120 I was getting) and they only last for maybe 10-15 (usually after I've had the door open to turn eggs) then they stabilize again. I haven't noticed a huge change in internal egg temps tho...so I'm hopeful for at least a few to hatch out.

My kids are 11, 10, and "close enough to 6" (her words). Oh, oh...I tried candling them at 3 days...and 4 days...but I had to get a better light. So now I have a better light & don't really know what to look for other than veins. I'm really more interested in what a "bad egg" looks like.

As for patience, I was learning some with my gardening...then the rotten neighbor kids let my chickens out the other day (apparently my slide lock is not high enough - so now there is a hasp with a construction duty padlock) & they ATE my WHOLE garden...my wonderfully growing winter garden

So, I'm back to being impatient
