T-ball, may I offer a piece of advice?

Don't become a teacher!

I actually was an assitant in a special needs pre-school and then I was a temp. librarian in the middle school.

Then...I became a M-A-M-A...and decided I like mine waaaay better

I really loved working with the special needs kiddos - mostly dealing with autism, downs syndrome, and kids with TBI (traumatic brain injury). They were the sweetest kids. They, in retrospect, prepared me for my littlest one (Maggie Mae) - so thankful I took that position many, many years ago.
But, no...I would never even consider going back to teaching. I don't have the mindset for it anymore...or the patience that it requires

Special needs takes a special person:hugs

Two of my grandbabies are autistic. Special people!

They're a handful, but it's so rewarding when you see that glimmer in the back of their eye that says "I get it"

We got back an hour ago. Swapped the good battery back into the truck (Big Blue for future reference) took the old one into get charged/checked and checked on the chickies. David DS#3 fed them this afternoon and reported that the other Cornish got it's butt pecked bloody. So now my hands are purple again for another few days.

BTW - The Cornish Roo weighs 4.6 lbs!!! It went from 3-4 oz to SEVENTY FOUR OUNCES in five and a half weeks!?!?!?! How is that possible? I even calibrated the scale and it is correct.

It's got to be the cheese!

BTW - they only get a half slice split between the 8 of them once or twice a week.

Whoa, that's really big! As big as the 4-Hers want them to show. I wonder why they are pecking, though. Poor guy! I tend to believe he got so big from 24 hour lights/feeding. I've just added lights this week until 10PM, just to try to keep up with you.

now mikey, don't shoot the messenger, but i think that your red bird one dot may be a roo. it's 5 1/2 weeks, yes? and already has a comb and wattles? compare it to the other pic of the other red bird you have there. no comb, no wattles, not even on your BA. don't know about the red broiler or production red thing though. sorry. but i do know that that i have had my fair share of roos around here and they were all sweet as honey initially. they would sit in my hand, i could carry them around, etc. but one roo, a BA who had a politically incorrect name and was then changed to ricky ricardo, became too aggressive and scared the pants off me. so laree to him to camp and i cried for about a week or so. he was gorgeous and big at 8 months. and very scary!

I'd have to 2nd what Pastrymama said, but I by no means am even close to an expert. If this is correct then you may have solved one problem and then maybe gained one back. Depends if you wanted a roo or not.

My PR pullets grew combs really young, so hopefully Mikey has a Pullet.
This is Ginger and MaryAnne right around 18 weeks:

Couldn't find a 5 week old pic, but here is a picture at 3 and a half weeks. See the comb already??

Although Mikeys 1dot is probably a Red Broiler right?? Guess it depends on what the hatchery used to make them. Are they always Dk Cornish/RIR crosses?? or do hatcheries use their own special crosses?? I think Production Reds differ by hatchery. Mine came from Cackle.

Mikey- From what I understand the broilers aren't suppost to have as many problems as the Cornish/Rock cx, so I think you could keep her in your flock. If you run into problems later, I am sure someone here could help you out....so you don't have to process a favorite pet. She might lay some eggs for you too. Hoping she is a she!!

Pastry, Kev, Bootsie & SWchick...

AAAARRRRGGGGGGGG!!! One of her litter mates is definitely a roo - comb is reddened already and has not fully feathereed out.

I guess 1Dot does have a comb but I read that the Productions matured early so as to lay early

This is me hoping against logic...

Yeah, I was fighting with reaon and logic a while back with some buttercups when they sprouted combs and wattles by 4 weeks and then turned red within days. I thought, well they do grow fast. Then one crowed at me at 7 weeks.
