Sonoran,
you are in luck! Denmark is on the USDA list of countries that you CAN import eggs from without the 30-day quarantine (

)!
Importing eggs is not cheap but does not require lottery skills. I can help you. I have friends at USDA now

(But I swore never to import eggs again myself because I discovered that I apparently have weak nerves. I seem to have recovered from the experience though.)

OH NO!! You are enabling me! Lol! I wasn't seriously serious about it. Just find the research facinating, and would love for all of our chickens to receive the benefits of that research.

Your kids are at a great age to appreciate a hatching egg! And young enough to be impatient.

But at the same time, no worse than us adults!

I hover over the incubator and count the days, and have confessed to candling as early as 3 days.

Good to hear your incubator is doing better. Mine was creeping up to 101, so I put a curtain up in the room and it stopped. It's a VERY well lit room, no curtains.. It's for crafts and plants, need the light!

As far as a dud egg goes, buy day 5 you should start seeing some veins. By day 10 there will be definite signs of life! That's when most toss the duds.

Are your eggs white? The colored eggs are a little tougher to see.

My last hatch was dark chicken, couldn't see a thing , and quail..

couldn't see a thing! It was frustrating!

Our eggs now are white and peach and it's exciting to see the chicks!

Gosh,
I'm so sorry to hear about the garden! Maybe restart it? I still need to get mine in. I know how you feel about the kids. Last summer the kids around here stole my solar lights from the front yard/garden. While we were home! I heard them bragging and laughing as they ran off! And this summer they smashed in the small fence around the garden. Bummed me out terrible and I let that bed just die.

If you do restart it, I hope it's a good one!

Here's another great link on what to look for in an egg!

https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=261876

I candled the eggs again last night when the whole family was here - the kids & hubby about flipped out when they saw the little chick moving inside! I think my hubby was the cutest though - we were all in the bathroom cause it's really dark in there and he couldn't see over my shoulder cause the kids were in the way so he climbed onto the toilet so he could see better. My 10yo DD is so excited - I'm saving some eggs for her class to hatch out and now she knows what to expect to see.

I have 4 Serama eggs, 1 white leghorn, 2 EE ("mint-blue" eggs), and 1 brown (Golden Comet I think). I can actually see in the brown one better than the "mint-blue" ones. I think the white one is getting thrown out; I just see a yolk shadow with no veins or anything, Brown one is developing, EE's - no idea, 2 Serama's are developing - I think.

I can't wait to see!!!

Yeah, the garden...I was really excited to get my winter garden going because my summer garden flopped because I have horrible soil (all clay). Then these dang kids. These are the same kids that entered my Serama (4 little ones) coop while I was at work...either the dogs got them & ate them feathers and all or they flew away somewhere.

AND the same kids that were poking sticks into my Jap coop. And the same kids that climbed my fence & smashed my duck eggs. So, I feel that my rage toward them is fully justified. It's all I can do to keep hubby from flying off his handle & starting a battle of the neighbors.

I am watering a bit every morning...hoping
fl.gif
that there was enough root left to regrow at least the bell pepper plant & the peas. Lettuce I can do without. I'll replant the carrot & cuke seeds.

I can't believe those kids had the audacity to take your stuff while you were there. I really wonder about the parents of these kids...time for a soap party!!!

Thanks for the link

I say turn hubby lose on them, there is no call for that behavior from someone's kids....

Seriously!?
I don't really want to get in trouble but this inspires some ideas. Set out something they really want to touch (toys, $10 bill...) when you go to work and make sure you rub some habanneros on it first. Borrow a "gentle" German sheppard... Install a camera (Gallo knows a good one) and then blackmail the parents...

Have you told the parents about the trouble the kids are causing you? We had some kids making trouble in our neighborhood. We told their parents and it stopped.
Don't write off the parents until you give them a chance.

The kids live with their grandparent's & their parents are there sometimes. We've talked to them til we're blue in the face...but they have no control over those kids. The girl that went in my Serama coop was 3 years old, maybe 4. Then there's the teenaged boys that're there...I think they are the one's that are getting into everything else. Oh & I forgot to mention they broke the door on my peafowl pen & let them out one day too. Everything now has super duty construction locks on them, but I still don't trust those kids. They do however stop messing with something once I put a lock it...they just move on to something else

I can't let hubby loose on them because once he starts...there's no end in sight. As for me, I won't get into a battle of wits with an unarmed person.

And fencing in my property (5+ acres) won't do any good either because they'll just jump it. I personally think they're just snooping around & being careless - not closing doors properly/fully, etc.

Thankfully, there is nothing that they haven't messed with now...so we should be in good shape.

My red broiler roosters have huge, bright red combs already so if One Dot is red broiler, she looks like a pullet. I don't think they'll have as many health issues as Cornish X with age, in fact, I think some people have kept them to add into their meat bird projects. So, would probably be fine to keep her, even if she's a broiler. She looks like a red broiler pullet to me,

Mikey,
I'm planning to take pictures of my chicks later today. I'll post the PRs so you can compare with yours.

I think I have two pullets but it's possible one is a cockerel. One's comb is slightly bigger and has some very small pink wattles, but I think that's normal for a PR pullet. ( I've been doing some research/searching on it)
Have you searched BYC for pictures of red broilers? You could also call Ideal and ask your questions. They are usually helpful. Ask for someone who knows the PRs and Red broilers.

Thanks Tracy - At last we discussed this we thought I had 3 PR's & 1 Broiler - back before feathers & such...

That would be cool as heck! Good to introduce some hardness into the flock. It'd be interesting to see the silkie cross.
