My PR pullets grew combs really young, so hopefully Mikey has a Pullet.

Couldn't find a 5 week old pic, but here is a picture at 3 and a half weeks. See the comb already??

Although Mikeys 1dot is probably a Red Broiler right?? Guess it depends on what the hatchery used to make them. Are they always Dk Cornish/RIR crosses?? or do hatcheries use their own special crosses?? I think Production Reds differ by hatchery. Mine came from Cackle.

Mikey- From what I understand the broilers aren't suppost to have as many problems as the Cornish/Rock cx, so I think you could keep her in your flock. If you run into problems later, I am sure someone here could help you out....so you don't have to process a favorite pet. She might lay some eggs for you too. Hoping she is a she!!

My red broiler roosters have huge, bright red combs already so if One Dot is red broiler, she looks like a pullet. I don't think they'll have as many health issues as Cornish X with age, in fact, I think some people have kept them to add into their meat bird projects. So, would probably be fine to keep her, even if she's a broiler. She looks like a red broiler pullet to me,

Mikey,
I'm planning to take pictures of my chicks later today. I'll post the PRs so you can compare with yours.
I think I have two pullets but it's possible one is a cockerel. One's comb is slightly bigger and has some very small pink wattles, but I think that's normal for a PR pullet. ( I've been doing some research/searching on it)
Have you searched BYC for pictures of red broilers? You could also call Ideal and ask your questions. They are usually helpful. Ask for someone who knows the PRs and Red broilers.

How old are your kids?
I think I'm worse than them! That's why I candled on day 3 !
lau.gif

And I thought I was a patient person after years of gardening. I was told once that gardening would teach a person patience. Well, it wasn't enough!

I changed out the bulb for a 40watt instead of 60, but I am still getting temp swings. Not as bad...between 98 & 103 (better than the 92-120 I was getting) and they only last for maybe 10-15 (usually after I've had the door open to turn eggs) then they stabilize again. I haven't noticed a huge change in internal egg temps tho...so I'm hopeful for at least a few to hatch out.

My kids are 11, 10, and "close enough to 6" (her words). Oh, oh...I tried candling them at 3 days...and 4 days...but I had to get a better light. So now I have a better light & don't really know what to look for other than veins. I'm really more interested in what a "bad egg" looks like.

As for patience, I was learning some with my gardening...then the rotten neighbor kids let my chickens out the other day (apparently my slide lock is not high enough - so now there is a hasp with a construction duty padlock) & they ATE my WHOLE garden...my wonderfully growing winter garden

So, I'm back to being impatient

Your kids are at a great age to appreciate a hatching egg! And young enough to be impatient.

But at the same time, no worse than us adults!

I hover over the incubator and count the days, and have confessed to candling as early as 3 days.

Good to hear your incubator is doing better. Mine was creeping up to 101, so I put a curtain up in the room and it stopped. It's a VERY well lit room, no curtains.. It's for crafts and plants, need the light!

As far as a dud egg goes, buy day 5 you should start seeing some veins. By day 10 there will be definite signs of life! That's when most toss the duds.

Are your eggs white? The colored eggs are a little tougher to see.

My last hatch was dark chicken, couldn't see a thing , and quail..
th.gif
couldn't see a thing! It was frustrating!

Our eggs now are white and peach and it's exciting to see the chicks!

Gosh,
I'm so sorry to hear about the garden! Maybe restart it? I still need to get mine in. I know how you feel about the kids. Last summer the kids around here stole my solar lights from the front yard/garden. While we were home! I heard them bragging and laughing as they ran off! And this summer they smashed in the small fence around the garden. Bummed me out terrible and I let that bed just die.
hit.gif

If you do restart it, I hope it's a good one!

Here's another great link on what to look for in an egg!

Oh mikey, I see a big glimmer of hope and I just don't have any clue about red broilers and PRs. My opinion is purely based on breeds that I have had, which do not include those. Although I have usually been right in guessing out my roos up until these russians showed up.

Leave a message. She doesn't usually answer the phone unless she recognizes that it is a legitimate call and not a telemarketer. She will likely pick up the phone if she is close to it; otherwise she returns calls.

I candled the eggs again last night when the whole family was here - the kids & hubby about flipped out when they saw the little chick moving inside! I think my hubby was the cutest though - we were all in the bathroom cause it's really dark in there and he couldn't see over my shoulder cause the kids were in the way so he climbed onto the toilet so he could see better. My 10yo DD is so excited - I'm saving some eggs for her class to hatch out and now she knows what to expect to see.

I have 4 Serama eggs, 1 white leghorn, 2 EE ("mint-blue" eggs), and 1 brown (Golden Comet I think). I can actually see in the brown one better than the "mint-blue" ones. I think the white one is getting thrown out; I just see a yolk shadow with no veins or anything, Brown one is developing, EE's - no idea, 2 Serama's are developing - I think.

I can't wait to see!!!
clap.gif

Yeah, the garden...I was really excited to get my winter garden going because my summer garden flopped because I have horrible soil (all clay). Then these dang kids. These are the same kids that entered my Serama (4 little ones) coop while I was at work...either the dogs got them & ate them feathers and all or they flew away somewhere.
hit.gif
AND the same kids that were poking sticks into my Jap coop. And the same kids that climbed my fence & smashed my duck eggs. So, I feel that my rage toward them is fully justified. It's all I can do to keep hubby from flying off his handle & starting a battle of the neighbors.

I am watering a bit every morning...hoping
fl.gif
that there was enough root left to regrow at least the bell pepper plant & the peas. Lettuce I can do without. I'll replant the carrot & cuke seeds.

I can't believe those kids had the audacity to take your stuff while you were there. I really wonder about the parents of these kids...time for a soap party!!!

Thanks for the link
