Are there different types? Or have they now developed a flightless version?

The ones we raised for our reptiles as a kid could fly short distance and had wings under the shell.... My mom would get really mad when we forgot to cover the dishpan we kept them in as they would be all over the house.....

It's possible they were a different kind.

I've also heard they cannot fly.

I took a plastic shoe box and cut out portions of the lid and glued in screen. I'm the kind of person that would dump something with bugs and no lid

I'll try and get a pic later.

Need to go to MVD and get tags.

I'm back, been super busy and a little disorganized. Hopelessly behind, anybody have the short version of whats going on?

I'm trying to get birds washed for Farmington, and IDing those that are keepers versus sale birds. Some day my life will be organized--at least I keep saying that...for years now!

Thanks SS, Well then do I order blue chicks and hope there will be a splash among the ones I get? I had a splash last year and loved her so much. I had to leave her behind when we moved to Washington for a year and she died while I was away. I want another splash girl so bad!
I also wondered how old should the silky chicks be before they can go outside? If all goes well I will have some Silky chicks hatching this coming weekend! Everyone wish me luck!

Most hatcheries pen blue, black and splash together, and tell you that regardless of which of these three colours you order, you can get them. (Although with some breeds they have only blacks, not blue or splash--so for that breed you will always get black). If you want to be CERTAIN which colour you get, purchase from a breeder or older birds. What breed are you looking for?
