Arizona Chickens

I wonder if they would be more likely to lay in the nest boxes with eggs visible through the hardware cloth?

janetora, I'd be a bit more worried about lack of ventilation than cold if you blocked both upper vents and the bottom. While we certainly don't have as many issues as folks farther north, the combination of increased humidity and cold can be problematic. Perhaps you could keep one vent open on the side that is typically down wind?

I was worried initially too. But then I read on the forum that some chicken owners in Alaska don't insulate or heat their coop in the winter either. That's when I realized that my chickens will feel like at the spa here from November to March (and we got to 26° F here last winter).

No way are 2 birds laying 10 eggs a day. Several someone else's are helping them out.

I think we all realized she meant "WEEK"

I vote for permanently attaching a golf ball to the nest box floor

. But really, mine got moved to a new coop and introduced to a completely new nest box all in one day. They just know what to do. I have problems if they see eggs. They all want to go to the box that already has eggs (or golf balls). That's how eggs got smashed in the first place. If they don't see eggs, the boxes all have the same appeal.

No it was fun! I was envisioning the local bird population coming to the rescue trying to help out. Or maybe a racoon stealing eggs from the neighbor's chickens and bringing them over... (I smell Disney movie)

Your coop is far more enclosed than are any of mine. I would be careful about completely covering the ventilation at the top. Maybe leave the corners open by a few square inches.

OK, you write the script and Laree & TT will draw the animation. The rest of us will team up and do production and direction. Tryouts for speaking parts open to all Arizona thread members. And we all get rich when it hits the theaters

Meg Moringaseed needs to be in the story--was it Gallo who told us her legend? He can help wth script writing.
