Arizona Chickens

Sigh.... Ten day follow up worming today with valbazen and it is a chore with 42 birds. Not seeing many more segments from the tapeworms now, but have seen a couple over the last 5 days and this is normal for us when we have them.

Man it has been years since having to worm and will be glad when it is over, but tapeworms come from insect and earthworm hosts so one of these days may have to deal with them again...

I will be using some more natural preventatives then in the past like the cyan pepper seeds, but was this time around as well and still got them.

You sure will have your hands full with this chore. 12 were fun to do. Not all were easy to syringe. A couple put up a good fight but I won.

Did you happen to read The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy before deciding to get 42 chickens?

Hi TT,

Our flocks have averaged around 40 or so birds for many many moons and it just works best for us to be able to make feed money and a sweet little profit for the daughter (13) Plus our eggs and the ones we give away. With this number of hens on a "bad" egg day we still get a dozen or more which is important to our egg customers all of which are long time buyers and go into withdrawal if we don't have them on schedule

We have tried more and tried less but.....

On a great day 30 plus eggs... We have a second frige in my bike shop just for eggs and....er.....Beer

We just found 40 to be a workable number both for sales and fairly easy management and we also rotate at 3 years (except the kids favorites) which is important to keep a steady supply of eggs.

Awesome!

Maybe use your towel to help de-worm?

Have you considered praziquantel? I think it's more effective for tapes. If you still have trouble, you might consider that. A tube of ivermectin gold will have it, or, I believe you can buy it separately as well, although when I've bought the tablets for dogs they were crazy expensive.

rotate at 3 years. is that why my kids keep getting mad at me? my flock gets waaaay too big(broodies, hatching, mcmurrary, wandering into a feed store) and then i have to start selling some off before they even hit a year? i think i just need to learn "self control" but i'm not going to learn it on this forum

the kids now tell ME why kind of chickens they want and i remind them they have a yard full of chickens they don't help with. once they can show me they are serious about the chores, i will think about it. until then, they are all mine. well, except for the 5 year old. he helps me all the time and doesn't complain. he raked the yard last night all by himself! tonight, we worm again. i am already shuddering at the thought of having to do those 4 buttercups. tracy, two of those will be ready for their new home very soon! and they are getting very pretty with big combs.

No I haven't used praziquantel before and usually after 2 treatments with the Valbazen they are gone, if not good to know that praziquantel will do it as well. Seems tapeworms are more resilient than roundworms and I always must treat twice....

Thank you for the info!

Doing updates on lists on the first page of the California Whole State thread. Since we have Nevada members there I waa thinking I'd send out an invite to our neighboring border states so we have some out of state but close connections.

I'm working on compiling a resource list of sorts in the very first post. There's a members list, show and event dates and working now on a breeders list. Since some of you are close, I figured your information could possible help our members and visa versa.

If anyone wants their breeder information added to the first post, go to the thread and post your information and list of what you have. Look at the first page and see how I list it and then post accordingly.

You can also post show information if you have it. Some members do travel, so this would help them find the events and we sure hope all of you will check our list and maybe come meet some of the BYC members here at our events also.
