Arizona Chickens

Welcome! Very sorry to hear about the fire loss! But thank goodness it was just chickens and not the house. I was watching the fire story closely because my first job in AZ was as an Emergency Department doc in Show Low. I loved living up there but as a new divorcee it was awfully hard to find a date. I was also having a hard time finding a place to bard my horses. Ended up moving back with my family in Scotsdale and found my new hubby, now live in Mesa. Wish I could drag his but into the mountains or somewhere else with nice weather like Show Low or Flagstaff. We're considering moving to another state and buying about 40 acres when he graduates from ASU next year. He's finishing his thesis, taking his last couple of classes and teaching a Master's class right now.

Mikey--I was just kidding about it being permanent! The rain started to wash it off. I don't know about you but I was asked what Backyardchickens.com was. Good advertising. I asked most at the coop tour if they belonged to BYC. They never heard of it. I asked them to join and join our AZ thread.

edited because my brain is cold!

Thanks!! I think I might add my coop to next years Tour de Coops!!! We are working on aquaponics. We have about a dozen Tilapia in the pond and are growing wheat grass and "chicken salad" in a couple tubs for the girls. We also have some veggies for us as well. We also took down the one section of the lattice fence between the pool and "grass" (what's left of it)

What do you use for filters? I used to raise koi but never combined it with gardening. I'd love to raise fresh eating fish and I also miss my koi. I wonder if large mouth bass or crappie can be raised that way? Or walleye? So much tastier than tilapia.

Will send you a link when hubby checks his computer. He belongs to an aquaponics forum. Tilapia, he says, is the best fish for warm weather here. No filter as aquaponics is the filter. The plants and rocks and fish excrements are the filters. The water cycles through the plant boxes. Our water is crystal clear.

try this:

you can google aquaponics and so many sites come up

Mikey,
Your chicks are going to be 12 weeks on Tuesday and yes it's possible. My roo is trying too but he's not very successful yet.
Do you know who your culprit is? Is it One Dot?

I was checking out the pics and mama hen chris's hilarious youtube video, and my 6year old walked in and said "Are you part of the Backyard Chicken Gang?" He totally gets it.

7:30. I have crimped the copper tubing and removed the compressor. I plugged it in and have temperature and humidity readings. I hear fans running. Now I'm going to drill a hole to feed the heater cord and egg turner cord through. DH is still asleep. The kids are still asleep. I have an evil smile on my face. I've got my mad scientist on but good.
Bwaaaahahahaha.

To the la-BOR -a-tory Cricket!

P.S. My dog Cricket is my best minion. Always at my side, always faithful, always supportive, and quiet. Very quiet.
P.P.S. Why is there no mad scientist smiley? With a lab coat? I have no lab coat so am wearing my white terry robe. *sigh*

And it's perfect Mad Scientist weather! Gloomy and foggy out, mists rolling into the la-BOR -a-tory.

Now Cricket needs a hump, a limp & bulging googly eyes

*** ya know, if I could type properly the first time.... ***

And by the way of a second edit...

I have a red lab coat that I'd be glad to donate to your la-BOR -a-tory!

But you are going to have to post a pict wearing it!
