Arizona Chickens

Hey everyone....

Not enough time to learn where everything is so I am asking for your knowledge on this.

My BW Ameracauna who is 8 months old is unable to stand this morning. Yesterday she was off balance when walking, tail flared to help stabilize herself. Last night, gave her some Polyvisol and she ate one whole scrambled egg. I kept her in a dog crate in the house.

This morning she has no strength in her legs. She has smelly loose stools. She drank a little water and refuses to eat now. She also is breathing with her mouth open and her legs are hot. I ran cold water on them to help cool her down. When putting her back into her crate, she falls to one side. She also leans back on her haunches.

What am I to do? I feel very helpless and she is my favorite gal. I have to get going to work soon.

I appreciate any help in this matter.

Please email me at [email protected] so I can check mail at work.

mahroni-I was so sorry to hear that your roo died I was really hopeful that it would work so my 4th grade would be back in business. If you didn't have bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all. I think one of my BWA is a hen! And I still have the last chick that I hatched from your eggs that I am hoping is a roo. I will let you know! Then I can just start breeding them slowly. I did get my first FBCM egg. It was so awesome. I also food a really, really dark egg in my serama pen! I am going to try to incubate it and see what I can get. After one of the neighbors dogs got the gorgeous bwa roo and I was in tears about it, my husband finally made a chicken run. its is 35 X 75 feet. It was full of tumble weeds and it took him all day to burn them. He has been putting it off because it has been so dry and he didnt want to start the neighborhood on fire!! They chickens are not loving in. They liked running around the 5 acres and did up the garden and strawberries but they will be safe know. I am thinking about putting up some razor sharp barbwire to keep the feral cats out, but then it will start looking like a prision!

I am headed to my 1st 4h meeting on Thursday as the poultry leader! I am going to take a few seramas and maybe a lav orp, a silkie, and a cochin. I am really excited to get the kids around here excited about poultry. We are going to start hatching out some purebreed this year out of my 4th grade class so that they 4H can by them and the 4th grade can raise money for their field trip. Last year we hatched just a bunch of mixed eggs that no one really wanted to by.....so i ended up buying a crap ton of mutt chickens. So this year we are going to hatch stuff that people will want to buy. We have a connection on RIR, serama, and Buff orp from me and some one here has some baird rocks. If anyone else sells purebreed eggs let me know. I would love to get some.

Oh, here I am. Wow, even harder to navigate from my phone. Will take some adjusting. But changen is always good otherwise life would be way to boring.
In other news, my mom is finally coming home today! She fought off the infection and is doing well. So I will be camping out at her house for the next month while she regains strength.

Yea! Happy dance!!!

I'll probably just spend a lot less time here.

I guess I'm too old.

Member pages are gone.

NO BUY SELL AND TRADE HATCHING EGGS available. I spent a LOT of time in that area that is no more.

Makes me sad.

I also see no advantage to being a Platinum Poultry Member anymore. I suppose I could live with the ads.

You seem to be about as thrilled with this new forum as I am! I am NOT very computer savy. Yes it is sad. Wonder why the change and who it benifited. Not us old people!

Hello everyone. It's been quite some time since I've been on. I'm just wondering if there are any Arizonans here who have experience with peafowl. I know there is a peafowl specific forum, but our circumstances here in AZ are so unique because of our climate.

Apparently there has been a peahen roaming the neighborhood lately and none of the neighbors know where she belongs and nobody wants her on their property so they asked if we would catch her and either find her owner or keep her. For now, she is in a 6 x 10 covered chain-link dog run with a large insulated dog house. If we decide to keep her we will hopefully look into getting her a friend or two and make permanent, appropriate accomodations for her. I don't know the first thing about peafowl - what do they eat, what are their housing requirments in our heat, etc.? Anyone here have experience? I will also post in the peafowl section for square footage/bird, appropriate numbers of birds to keep, etc.

Thanks
