Arizona Chickens

The Marans were checking out the nests boxes.

Hopefully we will see a dark little egg this week.

Need advice - again!

I have come to the conclusion (With Becky's help) that One Dot is a Red Broiler - I however am going to pretend she is just a pretty red chicken - Maybe rename her Pollet Rouge

She has been squatting for over a week now and I've gotten some ugly dimpled white spheres for the nest boxes.

I am of course eager for the first egg (first ever for me & the family unit).

Should I put a timed light in the coop and give them/her 14 hours of daylight to encourage her?

The coop is sitting on puppy potty training pads to protect the floor, LOL! I brought the chicks in because of the wind storm we had a few days ago, I thought it was too cold for the chicks outside (maybe it wasn't, but I didn't want to risk it since I am such a new chick mommy).

My mom was just talking to me about this today! My grandmother used to raise chickens, and she would put in light early in the morning and late in the evening, in the winter, to encourage consistent egg production. She said that the winter months were darker longer/less eggs and the summer months were darker less/more eggs. Guess egg production is tied to daylight hours?

Glad you are here..

Hi, I posted awhile back asking for advice about a coop. Well--It's done now and I have chicks! I got 5 silkie babies from a local breeder. They are ridiculously cute and very sneaky--They are showed me several ways my run isn't chick proof when I let them out to play this afternoon.

I don't think you need to bother with light.
Is she checking out the nest boxes at all or just squatting?
Is she on layer feed now with oyster shell available?
It's really hard to wait for that first egg but don't worry it'll happen.

My chicks will be 6 weeks old thid upcoming Thursday. Is it too cold to put them outside yet? They are currently in my garage with a heat lamp at night. Also, I am feeding them medicated starter mash and need to switch to grower crumbles. Do they sell medicated grower feed or is it even neccesary at this stage?

No, they are not on layer feed yet. I just ordered it (bulk order and they are finishing up the last of the 17%. (technically it is chick broiler finisher)

I have a small feeder for oyster shells. I'll put it in the coop tomorrow after school.

I have not caught her checking out the nest boxes, although whenever I'm home I let them out and they pretty much stay outside (except for a nap/hang around the coop around noon it seems)

Yes, difficult waiting!

Do you think I should let them outside when I am not home? Like before I leave for school?

I've only been letting them out when I'm home and could hear a rucks if need be.

At 6 weeks you can just give them Grower...no need to medicate now.

In one more week, this thread will be four years old.

Also, now that it is after midnight, it is now Chinese New Year. It is supposed to be the year of the water dragon. Hopefully, that will be lucky for us all.
