Arizona Chickens

I was gone from reading the posts here while my mother in law was visiting. My chicks have grown so much. They are about 3 weeks old, supposed hatch date was 1/4/12. I am starting to think that those who have told me what I thought were New Hampshires are actually sexlinks(sp?) and roo's. They are both really mellow though. Both have barely any tail feathers and very light colored wings with no visible feather markings, while the other 6 have 1 inch or longer tail feathers. I have one black one with a big white/yellow dot on the top of her head (Enchilada) that is very curious, less cautious and more friendly that the rest of the 7. This is the one that tends to stand in the middle of the group and fall asleep. Maybe the head hen? My one Ameraucana or EE (named Parmesan), was told she is an Ameraucana, is strikingly beautiful compared to the other 7. Seven of the eight are looking really ugly. They are loosing their cute chick features as the feathers are coming in that look like sticks with sprigs of puffy feathers coming out. Parmesan seems to be getting her adult feathers but they are coming in very pretty. I am going to have to take more pictures of them.

Thanks to Mikey D I will have two new 236 leghorns this weekend )

I love my 236 leghorns. (See my Daisy on the left?)

I almost ordered a pair for myself but I wanted the App Spitz to be the only white egg layers - easier to tell them apart that way.

Keep me posted on how they do!

Becky, how are they production wise summer / winter etc...?

They are excellent. Never really noticed a slow down in the winter and only a little tiny bit in August. Daisy also comes running every time I open the back door and follows me everywhere. She even sneaks in the house when she can. They are small chickens but lay eggs just as large as my GSL and BSL.
My mom has two 236s that are mean, though. They were raised with mine until 16 weeks but then went to her house where they don't get much attention. Keep them socialized! (and pat them on the back when they squat)

I have had as many as three leghorns in my flock at one time. I'm down to one right now. They are egg laying machines !!!!!!

want to be able to tell them apart? do what I do. Paint their tails ! I have one with a red tail one with a green one and one with a blue one. I have two Austra whites that look like leghorns. They are much calmer then the leghorn

They are Ideal's hybrid leghorn (Ideal 236 is the name). They all have small black dots and some more than others so they are easier to tell apart too. Daisy hardly has any and Diamond (other one) has quite a few.

and if I had 236 leghorns, I'd probably get 229 eggs a day (not a week.)

Just curious if anyone is going to place an order from a hatchery? What hatchery have you used? Did they provide good customer service as well? Welp wants a minimum of 25 to be ordered. I am only wanting 4. I am looking for 2 EE's, 1 SLW and 1 BLRW. Or anyone planning on selling any chicks next month or so? I would love more Ameracauna's, Marans and possibly Olive Eggers...pullets only as I can't have roosters here even though I would love to. Decisions, decisions!!!!

Thanks all

speaking of not having roosters... ours started crowing this morning!
No takers, huh?
(remember, he's organically raised, handsome and well behaved)

You can order fewer than 25 at Ideal Hatchery and if you don't want roosters or packing peanuts you can say so. Of course, there is never a guarantee that you won't get a rooster. Even if you order sex-links! If you want 4 you can always order a few more and sell POL pullets. I usually order 10 and find homes for what I don't want. It's pretty easy with pullets/chicks.

So... I called to Post office today and the guy said chicks definitely won't get there on a sunday.. but my Mcmurray dates say they might! I am nervous about them getting there on Sunday now! How has it worked out for you guys?

We will not be keeping all of our baby chicks if you would like some of ours, they are from the Ornamental layers package so I don't know what they will be yet though! We might end up with something you might want? I know that the BLRW is on the list of possibles, but who knows? They get here the week of the 30th.

I'm down to 18 hens now. Three of the purebreds (Ameraucanas) went to Heber today with Boston.

Can't wait to see what my chicks turn into... and can't wait for the hatch in 8 days. Purebred Ameraucanas and some Olive Eggers.
