The Farmer's Markets at McClintock and Warner in Tempe and in south Scottsdale (I'll have to check my notes) is looking for eggs, either as vendors or for their "farmer" to purchase and sell. The Tempe market is Saturday and Sunday mornings; the Scottsdale one is Wednesday evenings. They are also interested in processed birds.

I ordered 1200 mealworms to start my mealworm farm too!!! This chicken thing sure has gotten addicting. Anyone use a substrate other than wheat bran for their mealworms? I was thinking oats or cereal or just chicken feed would work? correct me if I'm wrong

Thanks, I might have to take you up on that if I can't find any locally. I'm looking for about 5-8 pounds to start. I think that will give me enough to put in a plastic shoebox size container about 3" deep? I would eventually like to uprade to a 3-drawer system. The worms should arrive mid-week. Any tips for me?

Just about any grain product will work. Wheat bran has been determined to be the best nutritionally as well as for its physical characteristics. I would guess that every zoo in the world uses wheat bran and nobody produces more mealworms than zoos. Oatmeal is often used by hobbyists, but I don't think they do as well with that (but that's just from reading other's experiences, not my own). Chicken feed is quite good and lacking wheat bran, that's what I'd use. Five to eight pounds of wheat bran would completely set you up for a three drawer system. Two pounds would be sufficient for a shoe box sized container. Whatever you use, be sure to freeze it for 24-48 hours prior to using. but now you have the setup, so when the other girls are .laying, the cost will go down considerably.
