Arizona Chickens

Pull the cap off of the end block.

A couple pieces of rebar down into the blocks on top and 2 more courses of block on top of the wall filled solid.

X2, sounds harder then it really is. They even make cement/mortar that can be used in a caulking gun just for securing bricks and stone. If animals are jumping and putting their weight on it I would definitely fill them in too.

The only breeds I've ever had go broody are the Wheaten/BW Ameraucanas and one Partridge Rock.

I had one Ameraucana that went broody at 9 months, just a few weeks after she started laying.

Oh, and Becky...what Mikey said. and anything you can put on top to deter the coyotes.

I have a production red that has been on her nest for 3 days now!

When you pet her she sounds like a cat!

I guess I inspire mother hood in chickens.

at what age do chickens combs and waddles start to turn from a pale pink to red? I noticed today that one of my EE's and my Light Brahma combs appear to be getting redder. They are about 19 weeks old. I was told they begin to get red around the time they are to start laying. Is this true? I was concerned it may be an effect of the heat the last couple days?

Thanks everyone! No, chickens are not going to happen just now. But hey, I won't live here forever. Got coffee in hand and kids ready for school. Beyond that, all is chaos. Situation normal!

Sorry to hear about the illness Nova. Wouldn't you all know it happened just before my friend Anne wants to re-home her little flock? Here's her info:

Hi, we need to find a good home for our hens. One EE, one dominique, and two silkies. They have been free ranging until about a month ago. The Hens are laying 8 to 10 eggs a week right now.
The reason for all this is we are getting a puppy soon and I will not chance the hens becoming chew toys. They now have a safe hen yard but the kids are having a challenge keeping the gate closed. :/
SO... any takers? And yes they are free to a good home. Located in the East Valley.

Cotton lost one of her pretty chicks last night. To late I knowtest that the chick had pasty butt. The others I checked and had two with pasty butt but not as bad and was able to clean them up. They are Ok this morning. I didn't even think to look for pasty butt! Didn't think chicks had that problem when with their mothers? Why is it that it's the prettiest chicks that die? Bummer!
I keep reading that silkies have trouble with the heat. But is a misting systum good for silkies?

Good news on my neighbors roo (who came down with a runny nose). We found a piece of straw jammed way the heck up his nostril. We pulled it out and gave him some medicine to help heal things up. He is doing much better! Phew! I was so afraid her flock was doomed.

Hey everyone. I had to cull my whole flock due to the spreading illness. I am going to let my land rest and let the sun/bleach bathing kill off any of the disease pathogens for my whole property. I want to start over, but I am not interested in getting chicks again. Waiting for so long, just to lose my oldest pullets just before they start laying? Ugh. That was a swift kick to the teeth. My husband and I would wish to get some Aurcanas (sp?). If anyone is selling laying hens and a rooster, I would love to get your info and prices.

Side note, I will not bring any new chickens to my property for a few weeks. I want to make sure that I am overly cautious on making sure the disease pathogens are deceased.
Heart broken for you. I couldn't imagine the heartache your having to go through.
