Arizona Chickens

Well that just figures. Thanks for the info. You saved me a long drive, $8 and disappointment when I got there

Sorry, Sherrie, I only found out at the last minute and didn't think to post here before running out the door to catch what was left of the show. At least you didn't make the drive - or the long trek from the main entrance to the exhibit area. Sure do wish the fair organizers and/or poultry organizations would publicize the poultry part better. I had been looking for a schedule for weeks. Only found out by accident. It was NOT publicized. Even the lady in the vistor information booth near the fairground entrance didn't know where the poultry exhibit was until someone told her I was looking for "4-H".

Ive purchased two Peafowl from a guy that sells at the fair ever year. Might be the same guy. I have a Java green and Indian Blue both are 3 years old now , only 1 more year until they can breed

when you are ready I can get you his number

Hi GoldBarRanch,

Thanks for the info. My post wasn't very clear. The Javas I fell in love with were Black Java chickens, not peafowl. Gorgeous black birds with a lovely green iridescence. Turns out they're one of the oldest breeds in the US. http://www.feathersite.com/Poultry/CGD/Java/BRKJava.html I am in love, but I'm not sure they'd be happy in my enclosed run. Too little vegetation and too many loose dogs for free-ranging chickens in my neighborhood.

Nothing against peafowl. They're gorgeous, too! But they would definitely leave my yard at the first opportunity. And they are noisy. On the other hand, it would be fun to annoy the neighbors with peacock calls as payback for all the times their barking dogs have kept me awake... or threatened me in the street... or broken through my fence and mangled my pond... or tried to dig into my chicken coop. I may have to rethink this no-peacock thing! (Why is there no "evil laugh" smiley when you need one??)

Had a really windy, cold and some rain squal go through Wittmann! When I went out to see if all was well I found one chick out cold. Not sure if it was thrown or didn't get under Cotton's wing fast enough. It was barely alive but I stuffed it in between my boobs and finished getting one area that blew over in the goat pen taken care of. By the time I was in the house some life was stirring. Put the chick on a heating pad and was able to return it to Cotton about 2 hours after I found it! Big Boobs can be good for something!

Quote: I got this off of their facebook page: I plan to go as I need to get more feed.

Sunday, April 29th...
* Nutrena Consultant : Poultry Nutrition, Questions, and Answers from 10am to 11am.

* Meat Bird Class with Vanessa Rice at 11 am

* Backyard Chicken Class with Greg Peterson at 12:30

*Discounts on poultry feed and supplies!
I got an email today from Urban Farmer. It had this on it. I have my husband watching the kids so I can go to this "Meat Bird" class at 11. Is anyone else planning to go? If I can find my Backyard Chickens shirt, I'll wear it. I don't plan to have meat birds but if one of my hens quit laying or starts eating eggs, she may become dinner. I guess if their is a "live" demo I should be able to tell if I could do it or not. I was feeling poorly yesterday but got to spend a little time out with the chickens yesterday. I had chills and hot spells all day yesterday. Glad that's gone and I am back to normal. ~Selina

Hey everyone!!! Thank you so much for your support. I certainly couldn't have found a more loving and supportive community!

Everything is going great here! My tiny flock of tiny chicks never got sick (they were in their own area the entire time), the ducks, geese, and turkeys are doing fantastic. I Oxine sprayed the living crap out of my property (I got a new and unused industrial sized weed sprayer to do the job!) and am thankful for the 100+ degree weather we have been having to bake my property to high heaven. The neighbors roo, whom I feared came down with what my flock got) is doing fantastic! He merely had a straw in his nostril and is doing great. Happy to give the bright side update. Thank you all for all of your suggestions, hints, and tips. I am so new to the chicken raising (since January of this year) and have lots to learn still. Thank so very much to all of you!
