Arizona Chickens

Welcome, Danielle27! There are lots of great people here!
About flies, I found a wet area in the run. It was under about 6" under totally dry soil. Anywho, it was loaded with maggots. I dug it all up and called the hens over. They had a feast. The last time the run was watered down was when we had those few days of 100+ temps. I also picked up a fly repellant spray that is labeled specifically for "poultry houses". I've only had to use it once, but it really worked well.
On another note, two of my Ameraucanas are wanting to go broody AGAIN! PASTRY'S right about Dar's psycho Ameraucanas.

What is the brand of fly spray and where did you find it?

pdx2phx, Why do you have to let Uno go? What will Duo ever do with out him or each other for that matter! I hear that the roos don't crow very loud and maybe you can keep them in a pen in the house anyway. I will be getting my eggs this fall after it starts to cool down again for winning the Short Story contest. If you just have to let him go maybe I can take him but that will be sad for the two.

Hi everyone! My family and I have just started raising chickens in our backyard. We have 2, 3.5 month old red sex links, one 2.5 month old dominique, one 2.5 month old barred rock and a 3 month old white silkie. They just moved into their coop about a month ago and have done great ever since. Lately we have had a bad fly problem even though I clean the coop and run daily. How do you AZ people deal with the flies that come with the heat? I live in central/east Tucson, within the city limits and don't want my neighbors to hate us because of all the flies. I bought some DE and have been applying it almost daily, but haven't seen much improvement yet( a little). There are no flies in the coop, just the run. Does it just take a while to work?

Anyways, it's great to see so many other AZ and Tucson, AZ chicken people here. Anyone else have city chickens? Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome, I can't give you any answers on the flies. This is my first season with the chickens. Mine (mostly) are 4 months old.

You'll find a wealth of information here though.

I wanted to share a couple more Serama chick videos...Uno and Duo are about a month old now!

We are 90% sure that Uno (the darker one) is a roo, so at some point in a month or so we will probably be looking for another home for him....PM me if you might be interested, and would give him a good home with lots of babes :D   He is pretty little, but I'm not sure size-wise what he will end up being.....

about 2 weeks ago, Peeping competition!

they are way too cute

Funny moment this morning. I watched as the girls were protecting their left over breakfast burritos from the Grackles. They were chasing them out of the yard. 5 or 6 Grackles would land and the girls would all take off different directions to chase them out as a few of the girls would be chomping down on the eggs and tortillas. It was quit comical as I stood in the kitchen and watched them for a good 15 minutes. I should have caught a video but my phone is full and needs to be downloaded.

One thing you can do for flies in the coop or run is to get an automatic sprayer like the lysol air fresheners or the more expensive Country Vet ones, and use the Country Vet metered fly or mosquito spray. I typically have one on my back porch during the summer. You can also hang No Pest Strips and/or fly paper strips in areas with problems.
