Arizona Chickens

Welcome to BYC! I've always wondered about the fly problem too with no luck. I did though just this week put up one of those disgusting smelling fly traps just for kicks. So far I would estimate about 500 flies! Just a drop in the bucket but hey that's 500 less right?

Hi everyone! My family and I have just started raising chickens in our backyard. We have 2, 3.5 month old red sex links, one 2.5 month old dominique, one 2.5 month old barred rock and a 3 month old white silkie. They just moved into their coop about a month ago and have done great ever since. Lately we have had a bad fly problem even though I clean the coop and run daily. How do you AZ people deal with the flies that come with the heat? I live in central/east Tucson, within the city limits and don't want my neighbors to hate us because of all the flies. I bought some DE and have been applying it almost daily, but haven't seen much improvement yet( a little). There are no flies in the coop, just the run. Does it just take a while to work?

Anyways, it's great to see so many other AZ and Tucson, AZ chicken people here. Anyone else have city chickens? Any advice is appreciated.

Welcome, Danielle27! There are lots of great people here!

About flies, I found a wet area in the run. It was under about 6" under totally dry soil. Anywho, it was loaded with maggots. I dug it all up and called the hens over. They had a feast. The last time the run was watered down was when we had those few days of 100+ temps. I also picked up a fly repellant spray that is labeled specifically for "poultry houses". I've only had to use it once, but it really worked well.

On another note, two of my Ameraucanas are wanting to go broody AGAIN! PASTRY'S right about Dar's psycho Ameraucanas. ;)

Thank you! I'm happy to be here.

And thank you for the replies.

There is a place just outside the coop that the flies love, maybe more than they love the run. It's strange because there is no chicken poop there. I do water the tree that occupies the space. I wonder if I may have maggots under the ground too. Maybe that's where all the flies are coming from. I had no idea that was even possible. It sure gives me a place to start though.

I also put up one of those stink fly traps. Oh man they smell, but they work. There were thousands within only a week.

I wanted to share a couple more Serama chick videos...Uno and Duo are about a month old now!

We are 90% sure that Uno (the darker one) is a roo, so at some point in a month or so we will probably be looking for another home for him....PM me if you might be interested, and would give him a good home with lots of babes

He is pretty little, but I'm not sure size-wise what he will end up being.....

about 2 weeks ago, Peeping competition!

Towel bathing, with a little snooze for good measure....

Uno and Duo towel bathing in the "crack" of the couch.....Uno steamrolls his sister Duo a couple of times

Hello from a fellow Tucsonan and welcome to our AZ thread! I'm central, just east of Reid Park. I'd bet the flies are coming from the spot under the trees where you're watering. All they really need to develop is wet/damp soil. I think I have a fair number coming from my compost bins, which are damp. We also use those stinky fly traps, they seem to work pretty well as long as I keep up with maintaining it.

I have to work today and tomorrow and I'm SICK. VERY RED, inflammed, swollen throat, headache, stuffy, fever....

Thanks to AZKat who relieved me of some roos yesterday.

I still need to find someone who wants to buy my Red Sussex pair.... before he starts crowing... he's already started sneaking up on the girls and is spreading his seed.

I'll need to take ca some roos. out of the 7 that hatched 4 are roos (sulmtalers)
