Arizona Chickens

I'm so very sorry to hear all this, Fuzzybird.
How HORRIBLE. I have lost birds to my dog twice over the years and it's the worst.
The last time it was my lovely, blind, girl, Flash. She must have been following me/my voice and entered the main yard.
I never saw her do this. She probably got lost. I was in the main garden/chicken area, when I heard her call out..........I ran over, thinking she was just hurt.......but the dog had broken her neck. I cried and cried with her in my arms for a long time. It broke my heart and I STILL (going on three months later) feel horrible about it. It was my fault, as I was dealing with the new baby chicks and never saw Flash. Gosh, I want to cry again just writing this. My heart goes out to you. I am so, so, sorry!!!!!!!!!!!

Aww, you made me get teary again! The last day or two I will just tear up with out a reason. I quess the emothion was just so intense it is taken awhile for me to get over it. I had so much fun watching the young turkeys and Blue Bell come running at my call. The littlelist ones flew a bit. Wish I could get to Tucson to get one of the young Royal Palm turklets. Thank you so much and sorry for you loosing your Flash.

Thought I would post this picture of old Blue Bell without her tail. She is pretty perky today despite the awful hot wind! The temperature is unreal! Her wings cover her poor bare back. She is looking old these days. This will be her 3rd trauma that could have killed her!

So sorry about the losses...I sold a bunch of chickens and Welshies this past weekend...This morning I found fire ants under the quail...now going to spread the DE I got today....hubby got chewed watering a lemon tree from the fire ants....I sure hope this works or everyone gets locked up for drastic measures...

It can help to wrap the bird in a towel so that it cannot move much. I then put the bird in my lap sandwiched between my legs, either facing away from me or toward me. Then I have both hands available. One to hold the mouth pen, the other to administer the meds.
Good info. I'll keep that in my notes in case I go through this again.

I think Lucy is getting back to normal. She's drinking gatorade-for-chickens I found at the feedstore. She has full control of one foot and is doing better with the other. She's looking much better. I think our next adventure with this will be trying to give her a bath to clean her rear feathers up. Any good tips for giving a chicken a bath? or at least cleaning rear-end feathers? The good news is the 4wk olds and other 2 older girls are doing well despite the heat!

Pretty upset at this heat. lost one of my silkie/polish roos today due to heat ! So my daughter wants to keep the last of his babies and name it after the dad .

So sorry to hear of the fire ants! They are such beastly creatures, aren't they? They anger me. I go momma bear on ANYTHING that would hurt my precious babies. Grrrr! I am hoping the sevin dust does the trick. I will be trying a few things the zoo uses to rid their place of fire ants as well.
