Arizona Chickens

O.K. If you haven't already heard, we're having a BYC pot-luck dinner at my house tomorrow at 6:30 pm. If the prospect of all the regular Tucson BYCers isn't enough to capture your interest, consider our special guests of honor, all the way from Apache Junction, Mikey D and The Control Tower! PM me for directions.

So you've had luck with this and your hens, Mikey? Definitely good to know!

There sure are some great deals on Craig's List right now. 4'x7' coop with 7 laying hens, feed and feeder, plus hay for $200. A selection of 3-month pullets for $15 each. A 9'x4' coop with swing door and nesting boxes for $199. 4 Bantam Cochins for $40, although they look like they need a major bath, which worries me.

Oh, I've learned quite a bit about the biosecurity. I'm not saying run out there and grab all this stuff without checking anything first. If I do get "permission" for a flock, I'll be building my coop and run from scratch and then buying some pullets from a reliable source, most likely. I've always been of the philosophy of do things right, do things once. Checking for mites, lice and worms is something you can do there before you even buy them, as well as the other general welfare checks for bumblefoot and pecking injuries.

Big fan of watering nipples.

I had the day olds on them from the first week.

Awwww!!!! I wanna go! *pouts*. But my husband has to work and he needs our only vehicle (my dandy truck!) for working night shift at Intel. /sigh. Ah well. Perhaps catch the next potluck!

Wishing I could go :/ , it would be really nice to meet you guys! But Sat is my Sunday and I get ready for the work week ahead ( and a vacation too :D). I work in a hospital and my days can be long and brutal. Hence, the urban farm and chicken weirdness. Lol, I need a release and I certainly get it from them.

I really don't think chickens cause weirdness, I think they are only an excuse for us to flaunt it! I was horribly offended on FB the other day. My youngest human daughter got a new puppy and I posted a pic. EVERYONE commented on his cuteness ( he is!). But it occurred to me that I in no way get that reaction when I post my chicken daughter pics!:(. I was going to post a nasty statement about chicken prejudist, stereo typing, narrow minded people, blah , blah ,blah, when my youngest h.daughter stopped me with an embarrassed look, so I just kept it in. Still irks me.

ANYWAYS, ARGH! I jinxed myself before vacation! I officially have a sick or injured bird. My BR Rocky started limping a little thurs. I cleaned it off and checked her over didn't see anything. Friday, full blown limping, only can bear weight a little. I have placed her in the sick kennel in the house. We are soaking, spraying and medicating for pain. I keep worrying about bumble foot! I check and don't THINK I see anything....maybe a swelling...maybe not....oh idk! The worse is I leave wed. For a 8 day vaca! My youngest h.daughter is coming to the house to care for the animals. She is studying to be a nurse. I told her if it is bumble foot, I would send her the links and she can practice wound debridment :D. She turned to look at me and said " you really need to find someone else to take care of your chickens!". Both my h.daughters don't care too much for the chickens! They are jealous! That sibling rivalry thing... And at their ages!

Anyways, I'm worried, worried, worried!
