Nessa - Congrats on the new ones. I'll be you are excited to have some again. How goes the downsizing and walking projects?

Wonder if a fan would dry the chickens too much? If the air is dry and you blow it over the chickens...
How about one of those summer-play things, fans with misters built onto them (for kids, originally)?

Need to post a question about strange eggs - how do I initiate a post here? I don't see a 'POST Message' link anywhere...??

There are lots of things to make them more comfy, but as near as I can tell shade and water are all that is critical...well, that and air circulation...don't lock them in a closed box (coup without lots of air flow) in the heat. As for the fan, if you go that route, make sure they can get out of the direct breeze and the fan just keeps the air moving. Most folks here have coup that are very open so the air can move freely without fans. For example, a screened in pourch style instead of a house with 4 walls.

I like it when things are neat and rounded. In a job where things are often "close enough" or "not enough to be material" or even "horse shoes and hand grenades, people!!" an even '000 is like a warm spring breeze.

Well, since I posted that, I have experience with chickens in the summer. Luckily, we have an enclosed stable with chicken wire from the walls to the roof. So, they do get some kind of breeze, if there is one, but they definitely have shade with lots of water.

We have used a mister, but if you run it too long, you end up with a muddy mess. Not that the chickens mind, but it can get kinda smelly and walking in it is treacherous. So, we limit how long it runs.

Since last summer, we put an addition onto the stable and gave the chickens their own Arizona room. It is covered with chicken wire from top to bottom, attached to a 5 foot fence. They will get more air flow if they hang out it there this summer.

In my experience, as long as they have lots of water and shade, the chickens do ok. We do have a big water dish that the chickens soak their feet in during the day, That seemed to help a lot, too.

We have our mister on a timer and it comes on several times in the summer for 15 or 20 minutes at a time. If the chooks are free ranging and hear that thing come on, they make a beeline for the coop to stand in the mist. I think they appreciate it greatly! You can get a pretty cheap timer at Home Depot. I like the idea of them having a place to step into the water. We have nice cool grass, but only if they are out of the coop.

^^Agreed. Anything not so tidy makes me grab a mob and a scrubber. The number 89 makes me wince. HARD.

Mob's do have a way with numbers....

I sooo cant wait till they get here.

On a side note, candled again when my broody took her normal break from the nest. She is down to 3 eggs. 1 is viable for sure, its so dark in there I cant see anything but a big black blob (the bantam frizzle egg), and the second one Im pretty sure is filled with chick and the third

Hopefully she will at least have one hatch poor thing.

Doing good. I have not decided if I like the rain or not. It puts a damper on a lot of things. Today I got everything bleached and washed up for the new arrivals this weekend, cleaned out the dog's tree house and went to the feed store. I really hate not being prepared and since last time I ordered the hatchery sent me 117 EXTRA birds, I decided to prep more than just one brooder.

I only ordered 50 this time so how bad can they screw it up? 120 birds?

Also the Blue Cochin I got from you is broody and sitting on some eggs. She is on day 14. She is doing wonderful. Gets up about once a day to do what she needs to do (as fast as she can, really funny to watch) and then back to the nest.

She's a great Chicken and one of my Favs. Thank you Nessa!
