Arizona Chickens

I bought mine at a feed store Saddle Mountain Ranch. I could only get 50lb bag. The owner says she will break some of the bags down into maybe 5lb or less. The 50lbs will last longer than me. Do be sure it is food grade. I also give oster shell, Scratch or cracked corn, Layer mash or pellets Sometimes I mix it all. I back off the corn in the summer, as it makes heat, and the chickens sure don't need extra heat in the summer.

I had a fortress around, under and on top of my garden also. Mine still got eaten. BIG FAT BUMMER! I was just throwing $$ away.

I feed my chickens the egg shells also. I rinse out the shell, let them dry and place in a large container. I break them up. I really break them down into tiny chips.
I have always recycled the shell for them.

Treats are another thing I feed. Not every Day but a few times a week. Their all time favorite is Yogurt. And it is so good for them.

A favorite feed store on the East side:

Pet Club

Mesa Feed Barn will sell you Oyster shell by the pound if you want just a little bit.

I haven't checked for food grade DE.

Cute chicks!

Ok, my phone rang in the middle of my posting.

Love the rainbow maker picture. Thank you!

The only thing eating my garden (which is in containers above the ground) are my chickens when they escape and aphids. What is eating your gardens? Is it an outside the city thing?

Dark eggs from friendly chickens that lay well would be fun. Let me know how that goes.

I think I will let my hens hatch some eggs when they go broody this year. I will need fertile eggs for them.

If you want to buy a nest box, AZNEssa has some. I bought one from her for my mothers chicken for Christmas. Green Legs (her lone chicken) lays in it every day faithfully, only skipping a day about 2 times per month. Green legs has green legs and lays green eegs. She appeared in my mothers yard when she (the chicken) was about 4 weeks old, looking very tattered. After only one week of good food she looked so much better and has been a faithful friend to my folks ever since. She is spoiled indeed. When Mom pulls in the driveway she comes running!

Oh, Mesa Feed Barn sells Layena. You can buy crumbles or pellets there. The boys on Sat are not always the best for service, but the owners do well if they are there. Pet Club is a little less in price. It looks like a boutique for expensive pampered dogs, but they do have the feed there. Pet Club also has Calf Manna if you want to boost protein. Mesa Feed barn will sell you pellets, crumbles, grit and/or oyster shell by the pound if you just want a little bit.

Edited for spelling, etc. (including fixing the typo that she lays green legs.)

Not that I'm planning on running out and getting chicks today, but does anyone know if feed stores have chicks already?? I am probably going to end up ordering from MPC anyway since I want silkie chicks, but I was curious about the local offerings

Triple T: welcome

Western Ranchman has many chicks. i just got back from there.

I saw something awful...these two girls and their dad were buying 4 chicks. The lady at the counter was trying to explain how to take care of chicks, and the dad said, "oh I have raised chicks before" all snarky-like.

Then the girls (with fake nails, the tips 100% bejeweled) turn to show me their chicks. One says, "Oh yuck, why did it sit in its poop?" The store manager replies, "You will have to clean that off, or else the chicks will die." She got really quiet and asked me, "How do I get it off?" She looked horrified when I told her she'd have to pinch it off with her fingers. (I sympathize

Then the other girl says, "We bought 4 last week, but they died."

"Too cold?" I asked.

"They had a blanket in their box outside...?"

Anywhoo, I directed them to BYC. Tonight's little drama, combined witht he CL ads for colored Easter chicks has left me a little jaded. I thank goodness for this place. It learned me good, back when I was 100% un-learn-ed.

YIPPEE! Just got back from Tempe Feed and Tack. VERY HAPPY!
They separate the DE bags themselves into 5LB and I also got some good advice. Really the store had everything I was searching for.

Oooh oohh! Then we went to check out dog food, they have a great closing sale right now for a case of dog food that is normal $30.50 for $9.90!
Bought a butt loud. Great food too.

Laree,
I know how you feel...I see that kind of garbage all the time. (and hear it)
I'm pretty sure if I EVER work in a feed store I would ban half the customers or annoy them with advice.

I went threw my old hard drive and found a huge folder or this kind of stuff. oO;;
