Our garden is a virtual fortress and the critters still get in. We have a 6" concrete footer, 2 cinder blocks on top of that, a 12 foot pergola wrapped with hardware cloth on the bottom 3 feet, a 6" baffle and above that, bird netting all the way to the top where it is covered with shade screen. You would think that something would survive, but every time we plant, a critter gets in and devours something that was almost ready to be harvested! Darn critters...
We are giving it another go here, this weekend. Why do we torture ourselves like this?

Edited for spelling.

I believe its the protein content that is different.

Is there any brand in particular that should be avoided?

I get mine from Mesa Feed barn so not sure what brand it is. I cant remember, sorry. YOu can also buy by the pound but its cheaper by the bag.

I think a 50 lb bag of Oyster shell was like 11.00 (dont quote me on that though

and gamebird maint was around 16.00 I think

interesting take on the oyster shell. . . I know that we have tons of calcium in both soil and water, but my girls go through oyster shell like it's a treat. . . .doesn't seem to have hurt them at all. . . but yes, the eggshells are very hard, the comment about cracking them with a hammer sounds familiar.

Extra calcium wont hurt them or you. Maybe make us a little constipated, but we should be eating more veggies anyway.

I would like to order some dark-egg-layer hatching eggs. Does anyone recommend a breeder here on BYC? Just weighing all the options. I thought there would be more advertised, but there aren't many. Lots of breeders are very new to BYC, so not sure what to think of them. I might like to try Barnies or Wellies. But I do like the Marans. Anyone every have Panedesencas? (not sure of the spelling).
