Arizona Chickens

I need some advice. I have 3 chicks we are estimating that they are about 6 weeks old. When can I put them outside in there coup? I know it's suppose to be 112 this week. Any advice on this? The chicks almost have all of there feathers except for around there neck. Thanks for your help

When we first got our girls home inside for sure... We bought the 1/2 inch by 1/2 inch
cage wire.. Wrapped it in a semi circle, used gardening staples.. Large..
secured the into the wet grass..
I brought them out front for morning coffee..
About 1-2 hours in the morning.. They had fun jumping around and flapping their
wings! To cute.... Better than Television.. I tossed in some dried mealworms..
Oh what a blast they has playing chase, who gets to eat this one... I even let the
H20 run in part of their area and they would drink & eat the bugs that live in the grass..
We do not use pesticide, so no bad chemicals for our girls to ingest.. They are good
weed control & a natural way to get rid of unwanted bugs..
If only more people knew how great they were :D

Also wanted to add that you should try bird netting around the coop and run. You can get a bunch of it relatively cheap at Home Depot in the garden section. If the sunscreen and moving the food didn't work for me, that was going to be my next step.
I used bird netting over top of the coop wire when I was first trying to keep the wild birds out of the coop. The problem we had was that it worked like a highly efficient desert gill net, trapping any lizard that contacted it. I ended up covering the 1" X 2" wire with hardware cloth.

Just stopping in to say hello. We are in Wittmann. We have a 4 acre farm with a herd of 28 Arabian Horses, 4 Peafowl babies, 1 very happy Guinea, 1 hen Aracauna, and 25 very quickly growing youngens'. Very new to this bird part of farming, but we are very excited to learn lots.

You can see some pics of a few of our animals here:

Thanks for reading.

your pictures are great. beautiful animals and beautiful shots.

SO excited. Just went and picked up the aviary for my quail. The sucker is huge. 56" tall with out legs, I'll be adding about 2 feet of legs. It is 63" wide. Can't wait to fill it with quail.

Howdy all. I live in PHX. Almost done with my pallette coop, and will be looking to get some hens in september.

Where should i get them from?

I've had the same problem with 1" poultry netting (aka chicken wire) trapping lizards in my garden. Plus, some of the smaller birds can still get through it. 1/2" hardware cloth has kept all the wild birds out of my coop/run.

The rabbits here will zip through 2"x4" fencing like it's not there, unless it's installed so the 4" length is horizontal. That slows them down a bit. But the ground squirrels still get through. Hardware cloth is the way to go, for just about everything!

You guys must have your run against stucco or block?? Part of my run is covered with 1" bird netting...not chicken wire...the actual netting stuff like you would put over a fruit tree. There has never been a lizard up there. But, they would have to crawl up fence postst to get into it. I am sure they could....just never have. Coyotes come up to my fence every morning, so my coops and runs are about 5 feet away from the fence. My dogs can run completely around the chickens to protect them. Wild birds get into the runs all the time. Not through the netting, but through the welded wire fencing. I don't really worry about it. The chickens are exposed to them when they free range anyway....no way around that. The chickens do chase off any birds and ground squirrels that come into the coop to eat their food. Their scratch also gets tossed inside the coop instead of out in the run. I mix my own with BOSS and 4-way, would be an expensive waste to let the wild birds eat their BOSS.

Hatchery or a local Breeder for chicks. General consensus is to stay away from the feed stores due to a higher chance of bringing home diseased chicks. If you are looking for grown ready to lay hens, I don't know. Maybe the State fair?? Occasionally some folks here have extras to sell or give away.
Welcome Odii!!!
