Arizona Chickens

Does anyone have any fertile eggs I can have or buy. Not much into driving farther than Gilbert, Mesa, or AJ. My van is in the shop, would have to wait till it's out. Parmesan thinks it's time to brood. I've brought her in the house and gave her todays unfertile clutch of eggs. She hasn't laid in 4 days. Shes been trying to brood for a month now but was still laying. Now I kick her out of the nest and when the next hen lays and egg and starts doing her egg song Parmesan is right back into the hen house to sit on the fresh laid egg.

You guys must have your run against stucco or block?? Part of my run is covered with 1" bird netting...not chicken wire...the actual netting stuff like you would put over a fruit tree. There has never been a lizard up there. But, they would have to crawl up fence postst to get into it. I am sure they could....just never have. Coyotes come up to my fence every morning, so my coops and runs are about 5 feet away from the fence. My dogs can run completely around the chickens to protect them. Wild birds get into the runs all the time. Not through the netting, but through the welded wire fencing. I don't really worry about it. The chickens are exposed to them when they free range anyway....no way around that. The chickens do chase off any birds and ground squirrels that come into the coop to eat their food. Their scratch also gets tossed inside the coop instead of out in the run. I mix my own with BOSS and 4-way, would be an expensive waste to let the wild birds eat their BOSS.

Nope, no stucco or brick here. For years I used chicken wire to guard stuff that everything wants to get into - like my garden. I learned from that and put hardware cloth on the coop/run from the get-go. I'm not worried about wild birds being around my chickens. It's just that I feed free-choice and didn't want the wild birds eating all the chickens' food.

itsredcandy: I have a broody (actually 2) sitting on a VERY small clutch of eggs (4). They have been broody off and on (mostly on) for over 4 MONTHS! So, I gave them 5 eggs, one got broken, so now we are down to 4. I candled last night only 2 of the eggs and one had definite veining and a good sized chick. So I guess what I'm saying is that they are developing in this insane heat with TWO hen sitting on them. I'll let you know how many hatch. I don't have any extra eggs at this time, though. Maybe try Trader Joe's?

to all the new people! Great to have you and I can't wait to see pictures!

I have a question...I have two pullets that are 17 weeks old. About 4 days ago, I found two small shell-less eggs where they roost, but none since. Only one of them is squatting. What are the odds that they both laid soft shelled eggs on the same day at about the same time? What do you guys make of it?

Anyone on Facebook? This was just posted and I gave her this thread to see if anyone can help here out in the Mesa Area.

This is a shot in the dark but is there anybody on this page from Mesa AZ area that knows how to remove bumblefoot. I've read all the articles on how to do but without someone there that actually knows what they are doing I don't want to attempt it."

Hi..Im just getting into chickens. I bought my coop and getting it ready. Just wondering what kind of chickens do good in the heat? Or which ones not to get. I havn't bought my chickens yet, any suggestions where and what kind to get. I live in Buckeye.

Welcome to BYC and our AZ thread! Most chicken breeds do well here in AZ as it seems that heat tolerance is largely an individual characteristic. My Cuckoo Marans handles the heat like a trooper while my Buff Orpington does not. Someone else may have just the opposite experience. Having said that, I think it helps to have chickens that been here in AZ for several generations, which means finding a local breeder. I'm not sure about breeders local to Buckeye. Your local feed store will also likely have chickens of various ages but you never know what kind of nasties you might bring home with them. Good luck with your preparations!

You know, I had an older EE that laid two eggs in a row. One day I saw her standing very oddly in the middle of the yard with her bum sagging down low when she dropped a relatively normal shelled egg right there onto the ground. I kept an eye on her as she wasn't moving much and within a half-hour or so she laid a shell-less egg while standing right there in the yard. She moved on normally after that and hasn't done it since. In your case, it very well could be two birds that each laid shell-less eggs. That they were under the roost is interesting--I think I've only seen that with birds that are new and inexperienced layers.

Too sweet!!! I would gladly give you hatching eggs, but it is at least a 2 hour drive out here. I like ArizonaChicken's suggestion. Trader Joes is a good idea, I have always wanted to give that a try. If you can't find any local, send me a PM and I will see how much it would be to mail you some.
