Arizona Chickens

You should know that type of wire is great for keeping chickens in, but not for keeping some predators out. It will keep out things like hawks and owls, but not dogs, raccoons or coyotes. It's not that I'm saying you shouldn't use it, just understand the risks involved. Everyone has a balancing point of costs and risks they're willing or able to accept. Lots of people here use that wire and have had no problems, but if you spend any time at all in the Predators & Pests section you'll find horror stories grounded in chicken wire. Keep in mind that you can always cover the chicken wire with something more substantial later on down the road. 2" X 4" welded wire is not that much more expensive than chicken wire and will keep out most things.

I'm not too worried about predators. We live in a residential area. The biggest predator in the area are stray cats. Stray dogs can't get into my backyard unless they jump over the wall. And I usually don't see any strays running around. Thanks for the warning though.

I'd like to move to a more rural area and would definitely add something more heavy duty if wild animals were around.

When I lived in Glendale and had chickens they didn't even have a coop but just a yard for themselves. Not to many coyotes or foxes in Glendale unless in the outer parts and bet you have a block fence surrounding the yard right. You should be fine with chicken wire.
In Wittmann we had a nice rain.

Yes we have a block fence surrounding the yard. Stray cats are my biggest worry as far as predators go. It rained here last night too. It was a nice test run for our coop, we figured out exactly where it got wet and where it stayed dry

Standard Poodle puppies at our house! Born Monday. Mother Louise looks proud doesn't she. 8 pups. 4 black and 4 apricot, 3 girls and 5 boys. The first born didn't make it or we would have had 9 pups.

Our babies are now 14 weeks old! We put them out at about 4 weeks after they had some of their feathers developed. We put them out early morning because the temps were really hot! They went out early enough to prevent a temperature shock and were able to get used to their new surroundings. We also keep them locked up in our fully enclosed run so the cats in the area couldn't get to them. We left them out there once we moved them out - I worry about temperature changes going from outside heat to AC. I'm not sure if it's much risk, but I haven't wanted to try if I can avoid it. They had a regular supply of frozen water bottles, watermelon, electrolyte solution and plenty of shade! This was our first experience with chicks and it went really well. Good luck with yours!

Anyone have trouble with something breaking into your treadle feeder? My hubby made it so the lid has to pulled up from the feed side to the back. It's tricky for me to even remember how to get the lid off sometimes. Anyway, something is knocking the lid off. It was on last night but then it came off sometime before the rain, as my feed is all wet now

We live in suburbia so I can't imagine what it is and why the girls aren't freaking out about it. They free range btw-so I don't have their run & house fence burried at all & most of the time the 4 ft door is open.
