Arizona Chickens

I was trying to take a group shot of the girls on my patio and Miss Phoebe (CM) decided to see what I was doing. This was the result!

Miss Veronica (BR) loves to roost on the fence.

She has figured out that she can slide down right to the BBQ counter instead of jumping down.

I stumbled across this really fascinating article with video on Dr. Mercola's website called How the Chicken Conquered the World. This farmer sounds really smart and seems to truly understand what he's taking about with the cycles of nature. It's a definite must-see and must-read. The first ten seconds or so has no sound, so don't go checking all your speakers and volume like I did.

Yes that's Joel Salatin. He is great! He has a lot of good books out there too and has a lot of videos on youtube. You can follow him on FB too at Polyface Farms. I sure would like to find a set up like he has somewhere around here.

For those who take the Backyard Poultry mag. she is on page 54, the first photo. Sadly the turkey chicks on her back which was going to be as sweet as she is were the two that the dogs killed when they were 3 months old.
I wonder if she was second place and just missed out of the cover page?

HI all, got back from a 3-week vacation over a week ago and still catching up. Our caretaker did a great job tending the poultry and garden while we were gone. If you haven't seen the article the newspaper printed about my chicken farm, here is the link:

I'm not sure how long that link will work. Wouldn't you know, they printed it the day after we left on vacation--what bad timing! Our phone message machine was full when we got back... Surprise, surprise, it was printed in the Arizona Republic, too. Guess they are short on news

All and all, I think it was a good story. Wish they had included that I feed all organic feed and I wish they had emphasized my breeding to sell chicks a bit more instead of processed chicken...I do sell some processed chicken, but it is not my main thrust.
I read this article. Glad to see it was 'one of us'

We need everyone's thoughts and prayers today for an eight year old boy named Jed. He's a close friend of the family who has had severe development issues, including chronic constipation that stems from the child abuse he suffered as an infant. He's been adopted by my Mom's friend and it's been an uphill battle for them. Part of treating the constipation, the gastroenterologist put him on a "cleansing diet," which should never be done on a child with all of his health issues. Well, trusting him, she followed his directions and he was found two nights ago in the bathroom, unresponsive. He was rushed to the Emergency Room and then transferred to Phoenix Children's Hospital shortly later. The diet had made his sodium levels bottom out, which is called hyponutremia. They started IVs and his levels are back to normal, but he's been in a sleep state for 41 hours straight (as of 08:00am). He physically reacts to certain stimuli, such as being cold, so they won't call it a coma.

For the medical gurus, they've done an EEG, EKG, MRI, CT, bacterial and viral screening including meningitus, and spinal tap. Every test has come up clear. He's running a 105* temp, despite two ice baths over night and a continuous regiment of Tylenol to try to break the temperature. Since he was found in the bathroom and is constantly straining while at the stool, we are trying to get them to look in to vagus reflex. This would cause the fainting and may have caused the weak pulse when he was found. We are also trying to get them to do a more thorough exam of the abdomen to check for gastrointestinal tears and bleeding, again likely caused by the straining. Any other suggestions or thoughts?

I'm headed to bed, since I work night shifts, but hopefully we'll have good news by the time someone wakes me up with a magical phone call or I have to leave for work. I'll try to post an update if anything is found. Thanks ahead of time for the prayers.
Thoughts and Prayers for you little buddy. This is too bad. Please keep us updated as to how he's doing.

Look what I found on CL...
