Arizona Chickens

We need everyone's thoughts and prayers today for an eight year old boy named Jed. He's a close friend of the family who has had severe development issues, including chronic constipation that stems from the child abuse he suffered as an infant. He's been adopted by my Mom's friend and it's been an uphill battle for them. Part of treating the constipation, the gastroenterologist put him on a "cleansing diet," which should never be done on a child with all of his health issues. Well, trusting him, she followed his directions and he was found two nights ago in the bathroom, unresponsive. He was rushed to the Emergency Room and then transferred to Phoenix Children's Hospital shortly later. The diet had made his sodium levels bottom out, which is called hyponutremia. They started IVs and his levels are back to normal, but he's been in a sleep state for 41 hours straight (as of 08:00am). He physically reacts to certain stimuli, such as being cold, so they won't call it a coma.

For the medical gurus, they've done an EEG, EKG, MRI, CT, bacterial and viral screening including meningitus, and spinal tap. Every test has come up clear. He's running a 105* temp, despite two ice baths over night and a continuous regiment of Tylenol to try to break the temperature. Since he was found in the bathroom and is constantly straining while at the stool, we are trying to get them to look in to vagus reflex. This would cause the fainting and may have caused the weak pulse when he was found. We are also trying to get them to do a more thorough exam of the abdomen to check for gastrointestinal tears and bleeding, again likely caused by the straining. Any other suggestions or thoughts?

I'm headed to bed, since I work night shifts, but hopefully we'll have good news by the time someone wakes me up with a magical phone call or I have to leave for work. I'll try to post an update if anything is found. Thanks ahead of time for the prayers.

MOLTING: I thought that word about a week ago. My first girl started laying almost a year ago. Today, I noticed, it started around her neck. Oh, man...I'm kinda scared about it. I'm more scared about clipping the wings after they grow back. I need to start re-reading information that I've now forgotten.

My thermometer said 105 was the high yesterday by the chickens...so wasnt expecting that otherwise would have done the ice or misters. Hopefully today it isn't as hot
Yes, I was surprised that it was so hot. I went out to check on my guys and they were having a hard time so I turned on the misters too. I am just lucky I caught it. They were uncomfortable. I am sorry for your loss.

Hi everybody!

I've been gone for months so there's no way I can catch up. I don't think Mikey can even catch me up with one of his shot-gun posts.

I went back a few pages and saw some "old" and "new" names. I'm going to try to stay for awhile, but my schedule has been very busy, so we'll see.

I currently have 7 hens and 4 1-week old chicks. My chicken numbers are slowly increasing.

I decided to try EEs again (my last ones didn't do well in the heat) and I got some more Ideal 236s. I really like them. They are small, heat-hearty and lay a lot of large eggs. They are also some of my most friendly birds. They follow my husband all over the yard and he finds bugs for them. They are the ones that finally won him over to the crazy-for-chickens side. Before we got the leghorns he was on the tolerant side.

I'll post pictures of the EEs in a few weeks when they are old enough to (hopefully) tell gender. I know there is someone on here that knows the coloring of pullets and cockerels of the EEs, but I can't remember who it is. I'm pretty sure I'll be able to tell the leghorns pretty early.

Does anyone in the East Valley have a water-heater box? I'm looking for the next step up for the chicks' home and a water heater box fits perfectly in the space I have for it.

Also, is anyone here in the East Valley getting the bulk feed from the VPA? I would like to but I can't pick it up. I'm looking for someone who can pick it up for me. I'll pay.

Thanks, Gallo.
I'm glad to see you are still here.

Darn, I just crushed 3 of the w/h boxes today. I'm sure there will be another one in the near future though.
It figures. I could have saved you a little work.

I got a water heater box from you before, right? Please let me know when you have another one and I'll pick it up.
