We need everyone's thoughts and prayers today for an eight year old boy named Jed. He's a close friend of the family who has had severe development issues, including chronic constipation that stems from the child abuse he suffered as an infant. He's been adopted by my Mom's friend and it's been an uphill battle for them. Part of treating the constipation, the gastroenterologist put him on a "cleansing diet," which should never be done on a child with all of his health issues. Well, trusting him, she followed his directions and he was found two nights ago in the bathroom, unresponsive. He was rushed to the Emergency Room and then transferred to Phoenix Children's Hospital shortly later. The diet had made his sodium levels bottom out, which is called hyponutremia. They started IVs and his levels are back to normal, but he's been in a sleep state for 41 hours straight (as of 08:00am). He physically reacts to certain stimuli, such as being cold, so they won't call it a coma.
For the medical gurus, they've done an EEG, EKG, MRI, CT, bacterial and viral screening including meningitus, and spinal tap. Every test has come up clear. He's running a 105* temp, despite two ice baths over night and a continuous regiment of Tylenol to try to break the temperature. Since he was found in the bathroom and is constantly straining while at the stool, we are trying to get them to look in to vagus reflex. This would cause the fainting and may have caused the weak pulse when he was found. We are also trying to get them to do a more thorough exam of the abdomen to check for gastrointestinal tears and bleeding, again likely caused by the straining. Any other suggestions or thoughts?
I'm headed to bed, since I work night shifts, but hopefully we'll have good news by the time someone wakes me up with a magical phone call or I have to leave for work. I'll try to post an update if anything is found. Thanks ahead of time for the prayers.
