Arizona Chickens

Hi everybody.

OK, a few weeks back I mentioned that I had been 'gifted' a rooster. I'll have to take a picture so we can determine what breed he is, but a little back ground info to catch every one up to date.

This is the rooo that I took pictures of his comb and waddles, and everyone told me to isolate him, which I had already done before discovering the black spots on him.

I would go out every day and put of all things, Vaseline on him, this got his comb and waddles back to bright red instead of the almost pinkish color they were, and last week I saw that the spots were all gone.

I have been going out to him daily. The first time I tried to catch him inside the isolation cage, he fought with a vengeance, but after doing that every day for several weeks, he mellowed out to the point where I could catch a leg and he would just drop, knowing that fighting was futile.

Yesterday was hie release day. I opened the two coops early as I always do, then I opened his cage door. I put dome pellets of food on the floor and outside the cage and he came to the opening slowly. Other chickens were starting to gather around the door eating what I had put out for him, but I didn't interfere, just moved my chair back a few feet away from the cage and watched to see what would happen.

He finally stepped up onto the door opening, then stepped down. MELLOW. And he looked around and saw the other birds gathering a few feet away pecking at the hay that is near the coops, so he sort of waddled over to see what was up, and joined them pecking at the hay bail.

I left for work.

Normally when I get home I stay home, but I had to pick up Phottoette last night, she was in the Christmas Parade, so I drove her to the Fair Grounds, then I settled in to watch the parade.

After dark the "girls" will put themselves to bed, or at least into the coop and nestle in for the night, and all the time I was gone I kept wondering what was going to happen when I got home, which coop would he decide to stay in.

When I got home, close to 9:30 PM (the parade was a GREAT success) I went to check the girls and the roo. The girls were all in their own coops, nothing happening there, and then I looked into his cage, he was FAST ASLEEP in his cage. I left the door open so he could get up and out in the morning.

This morning when I looked out at about 6:30 or so, I spotted him sitting on the ground between the two coops (they are about ten feet apart) and he was content it seemed to just wait until the girls got up and came out to play.

THIS WAS GREAT.

Today when I got home from work, I found that one of the girls has sort of "moved in" to his place. She was asleep sitting in a corner, and when I stuck my hand in to move her to see if there was an egg under her, she awoke with a start, yelled at me for disturbing her, then she calmly sat back down on the egg that was there. Maybe there IS something to having broody birds after all. I'll keep you informed, but in the meant time, all are doing well in Mohave County.

It shows there is 4 of you besides me on the thread right now. I need a answer right away please. My Serama chicks are almost 24 hour old. I still have them in the incubator. Should I keep them there for another day? Is it true they don't get food or water for a couple of days after hatch? These little chicks mean a lot to me and I want to do right.

Thanks Mama Hen Chris. I got smart and found some articles also about just hatched chicks. I will put them in a brooder tomorrow. I still can't believe I actually hatched Seramas! I have such little luck lately in hatching.

Looks like your luck has turned. Can't wait to see pictures of them. They must be so tiny.

I told the kids outright that we were going to sell them all if possible. I think all that are left are mixed breeds except for what I believe are a couple of EEs. I'll get pictures up one of these times, although they have grown out of the cute phase.

So, how many chicks? And how big is the enlarged brooder box they're already outgrowing? Inquiring minds want to know.

(Getting ready to build a brooder or two myself. Wondering if it's gonna be big enough...)
