Arizona Chickens

God bless you Gallo for helping TT. We love you both!!

And TT, you ALWAYS make me smile... even if we both end up getting in trouble with the mods!!!!

I love you, too! And I have never ever gotten you banned! I can't seem to find an "Inconspicuously Whistling" smiley that would be oh-so-appropriate.

Although I vaguely recall getting banned for talking about getting banned. I don't know if that was the "Trolling" or the "Flaming" infraction. It definitely wasn't the "Profanity" one. Maybe we should change the subject.

TT! As long as you know what they are and use them. As you well know we have sheer winds that can do and dose damage. I have had to replace shingles more then once. I was camping at White Tanks, a punishing storm hit. My tent is a 4 season tent rated for 60 mph winds, everything held for me. Others not so lucky, the caretakers of the camp site had to help a number of campers. When the storm let up they were let out of the park. (I said I over build.... I have a lot of camping experience..... I learned the hard way, it is more costly to cut corners.

So I know someone will be able to help me and since I don't have the time or energy to read a thousands posts tonight I am just going to post here. I went out this morning to a sick BCM hen, I think she has a cold so I pulled her right away and put her in a dog carrier. I couldn't put her in the garage since I have the garage brooder going with 15 chicks in there, I couldn't put her in my office since I had the hatchers and once they all hatch I keep them inside for a day before going into the brooder to make sure they are fluffy and dry, so the last place I could stash her separate from all birds and safe from my dogs, cat, and 6 year old was my master shower since it was the only quick solution as I was already running late for a staff meeting. I got home so late I didnt have time to set anything else up so she is still in the shower. It actually works pretty good since it is fully enclosed, I lined it with newspaper and set up her water and food and the dog carrier fits in there with room for her to get in and out to go bathroom. My husband was NOT happy when he got home to find a chicken in his shower.........

........maybe it was just the change in weather (rather suddenly) and maybe I am paranoid but here is what she was doing. It looks like she has runny poo, evidence of that was in the shower
sickbyc.gif
. Her eyes are clear but some goop on edge (kind of like what my family calls "sleep on your eye") she sounded congested when she breathes like asthma. She drank water today but didn't eat. She had crumble and because it was on hand and ready for the hatch growgel with vitamins. I am worried the most about her breathing as she keeps her mouth open to breath. No sour crop, and her vent is clear although her runny poo stuck to some of her down.

Thoughts or ideas? I am going to hit the books (and by books I mean other posts and threads) in the morning before posting on the emergency forum if I say "it got really cold here like 40 degrees everyone that lives east, north, and even south of Phoenix will laugh me out of the thread. Arizona people understand our weather but people with more extreme weather think I am crazy to worry about my birds getting too cold. They remind me of my father saying "when I was a kid we walked to school in the snow with nothing but bags on our feet up hill both ways during a blizzard
old.gif
" as he shoved us out the door to walk to the bus stop. Each time he would say something about when "he was a kid" it was like he expected us to say "you are so right dad, I am so lucky to be walking to the bus stop in freezing temps to ride a bus with no heat all the way to school which sucks because I would rather stay in my warm bed and sleep in...thank you for the awesome life lesson!"
Oh I can just imagine hubby ;-0 I've had one or two that sort of were congested for a day or two then it cleared up on it's own. That did happen right after I put down new straw so I'm wondering if they just got a snoot full of dust? I was the same way the next day, goopy eyes and stuffy head. I'd give her some ACV water and maybe try and tempt her appetite with something like earth worms or yogurt. Has it been windy and dusty down your way? is this one of your new ones? maybe a change in feed? The ACV (unpasturized with mother, like Braggs) should clear up the runny poo, especially if it's cocci.

Personally I don;'t worry about the cold after everyone has feathers. Every bird I got from you are all outside, no light and doing fine including the smallest ones. Was 28 this morning and all the water was frozen; I had to take some out to them before I left for work. Animals need to acclimate to their climate and they can't do that if you are artificially changing the weather for them with fans, misters, coolers and heat lamps. In the cold as long as there is no excess moisture in the coop and they can roost out of the draft, but still have good ventilation they will be just fine.

Heya!

Are Mikey and Laree still around? I'm here lurking from GA and getting caught up on all of the AZ happenings and realized I haven't seen Mikey lately on here, or Laree for a looong time. Can't wait to see my DH and my chooks in a week, and still hoping to be able to transport them all here to SE coastal GA...and to find someone to build a Chicken Citadel. (Cue imposing Music.....)

It's gotta be hard core security + enclosed run (no more free range

) , with snakes, foxes, raccoon, alligators (?) and other creepy scary things I don't want eating my ladies.....

Well I ended up with another in the shower today so now have two hens in the shower. Todays hen fell in the waterer and when I found her i thought she had died (a Cukoo Marans) when I pulled her out and was going to bury her I realized she was alive (barely) I rushed her inside got her in towels and blow dried her and she spent the day on heating pads. She is up and moving around now and eating but it is a miracle she even survived. Of course now she is sounding like the other. I did put ACV in all the waterers and also am supplementing the two sick ones with a vitamins and electrolytes and will start antibiotics tomorrow. It was one of those crazy hard to believe it was real animal days. I do hope by BCM hen gets better as she was one of the new ones and is my favorite one. Needless to say I got no work done today as I spent the day taking care of sick animals.

What kind of waterers are you using that a chicken can fall into ?

I have a double walled galvanized steel one that is HUGE like 15 gallons or something. Something on it broke and when you put on the outside cover all the water drains out so I had been leaving that off because I bought poultry water cups and was going to put in an automatic system instead of spending another $50+ on a galvanized deal. Well turns out the poultry cups are harder to install and use than I originally thought and have been problematic so the good ole galvanized deal is still in the run. After this happened I covered the open top it with a 5 gallon bucket and went and bought a new one.

Sorry you already bought a new one.
What I use is a 5 gallon bucket with a 1/4 inch hole about an inch from the top and a plastic tray that's for potted plants. Then fill the bucket with water put the lid on and put it in the tray upside down. I use empty paint buckets washed out so that cost nothing and the tray is less then $4 each. So for $4 you get 5 gallon waterers that only have an inch of water and only about an inch of opening. So it's even safe for baby chicks.

The one in the picture is the first one I made and I had put the 1/4 inch hole a inch up from the bottom but if you don't get a good seal on the rubber "O" ring on the lid then all the water runs out and it has a bigger opening that a baby could get all the way in. There easy to clean and I think the buckets are about $5 dollars at Home Depot so it still beats the heck out of $50 and the trouble with water cups. I love them.
Give one a try and you'll get rid of all your other ones.
