Arizona Chickens

How did this happen? I am thinking that the baby put the feather in her mouth, where it then lodged into her cheek. After some time it worked its way through to the outside.

yikes! thats pretty gruesome. I remember babysitting for a lady who's idea was - let them crawl on the floor and eat what they want, it will build their immune system. Those kids ate dead bugs and rocks and all sorts of things and never seemed to be any healthier than anyone else lol. Poor kids. I know accidents happen but we aren't wild animals! i think kids are like pets and should be supervised lol

Hey everyone! I'm new to BYC and was glad to find an Arizona thread. I wish I could read this entire thread but to be honest 3000 pages is pretty intimidating! Even though this weather is perfect curl up and read weather, I thought it may be easier to ask here.

I'm trying to build up my flock a bit and would prefer to find private breeders for the birds I'm looking for. I'm really interested in any of the Marans, Aracouna/Ameracouna/Easter Eggers, and some silkies. If anyone has any or could point me towards where to find any without ordering from a large hatchery, that would be fantastic. I found a few off Craigslist but I'm sure BYC is a better resource than that. Thank you!

A friend and I just drove down to Hereford to buy from Hippie Chicks. These guys have a real nice operation and are working with several breeds, including Marans. They hatch weekly and are well worth the drive. https://www.facebook.com/HippieChicksEggs?ref=ts&fref=ts

Has anyone gotten NPIP testing done in Arizona? Who do I contact to have it done?

What dose 'NPIP' testing? I have read about diseases and diferent vacenations. Being new to chickens, reading only gives awareness, I have a lot to lern. Example, low blood suger, a new pep dose not eat, they can become to weak to eat, or law blood suger. Put suger in its water. I got that information to late. I checked their crops, budgies are naked to it is easy, I felt her crop, it was always empty when I checked their crops. I figured that sence that was a SOP with budgies, budgies are birds, food in crop is equally important the first week.

Is there anything I should be looking for other the clear eyes, nose, and vent?

you don't need the sugar thing, chickens have done without for thousands of years. also look for external parasites on skin or base of feathers at tail, neck, and belly. Also i recommend you put vaseline on feet each week or so to protect from scaly leg. also i put it on comb and waddles to keep it from drying out in the summer

All this talk about dream properties. I drive past the ranch on Thunderbird just west of 59th Ave and I almost wreck every time because I can't stop staring and daydreaming. Imagine how many chickens and goats and farm animals you could have. I would be happy with even one of the pastures they have! :drool The aerial from google maps does not due it justice!
When it be great if we could start up a commune? Or even something like the kibbutz?

OK, I'M a true green horn. I clipped my girls wings. However, I was afraid of cutting to much. My girls can fly.

. I have been working on my garden, planting trees, cutting wood, assembling, putting down mulch...... I do not have their coop sealed yet, and only half finish with there enclosure. They were to be out of my house by now, I planned on putting a 75 watt or 60 watt light in their coop as transition. I have not turned on any heat and they do not have a light now (the one in the picture I turned on to help take the picture). LOL :0 I am going to have to view on YouTube a video on wing clipping! It has been years.... I thought I know how. NO, apparently I don't.

KingR0o5t3r: thank you, I checked them, they do not have combs yet, there are doves and quail the frequent my yard.
