Arizona Chickens

I don't think any of my silkies have ever been more than two fingers wide. And quite sure that my bantam araucana, serama and moderns would not be a full two. I honestly don;t think the spacing varies based upon laying or not; it does vary based upon gender. Now comb colour can help unless you have a gypsy faced breed or black skin like a silkie, and moist versus dry vent can help.

My large fowl layers will all go 3 fingers when laying; after they don't lay a couple weeks or longer they are down to 2 fingers or less. When I lived in Tx and didn't have the dog problem I have here I would go through my layer flock a couple times of year and any old girl that wasn't laying spent a week in a rabbit cage on an empty garden bed eating weeds and bugs. No egg in a week and off to the stew pot she went. These would usually be girls that were three years old or older. Back then I usually just bought new chicks in the spring from the feed store. Now I am interested in how long they might live and still lay as well as breeding so will be doing things a little different.

Happy New Year! Hoping all our eggs hatch and there are no predator problems this year!

Anyone here raising show quality (or at least close/SOP) Buff Orpingtons? I have a couple girls that aren't too bad, except they are light weight and light colored. But my roo is tall and skinny like a basketball player.... So, looking for a pair or trio of really nice birds to breed from.

I'm big on recycling, repurposing material has been a way of life. My nephew dose not like it, he wants that finished refined designer look for every thing. I made my own dishes and he thought they were ugly. It is frustrating, utility has its own beauty. I was going to build my own coop, but in order to get support from my sister (she is the trustee of my a small, but wonderful trust fund, I am on SSI.) I bought one.

He has shoes for his dogs made by Nicky, and designer parkas when he lived in NYC, NY on Hanover Square. They though stuff out that I know a lot of people would love to have. It drives me nuts. I tell them to set the stuff out by the street with a sign free, but they won't because it doesn't look nice, it is junk. A 75 yr. old cake cover I rescued from the trash, old bread pan my grandmother used, and a few other things, to them I am collecting junk.

400

I made this out of left over pieces, sealed it with fiberglass, it will be the base for the coop, I have a 6'X10' kennel for a run, as it is there is little room for me to move around and clean their run.

I'm going to dig down a little under their coop for cool in the summer. I am like that mister and fan. I will have to fix something like that for my girls this spring.
