Arizona Chickens

Desertmarcy,
I am hoping to relocate to a home with at least an acre in the next few years...then I can look forward to some real breeding ((-; Until then I plan to do everything else via those who can breed...

So, I asked Jeremy to run these pullets with a mature rooster a week before shipping...he did. today one of them laid an egg for the first time since arriving last Weds. I broke the egg to see if it looked fertile as I am getting that NH batch of eggs from him next week and could set some from these gals along with...here's a few pics...fertile or not in your opinion??? It looked fertile to me...it was still a little warm and was probably laid about 2 hrs before I got it. It is tough losing one to check the possibility but i just.had.to ((-;

cbnovick It is hard to get a picture that matches those in the link. It certainly is worth a try to save and incubate those eggs. The first shot looks positive to me.

Desertmarcy-
The pullets were penned with a rooster up until 1/14...so they are 10 days out from last exposure chance. I am planning on collecting and storing until i set 2 breed groups of shipped eggs next thursday....I will set what i collect from these BR pullets and cross fingers until i candle all on day 5 (-; Long shot, but what the heck--right?
I don't think it is such a long shot---go for it! Let us know what happens. That was nice of him to send you the birds already bred.

would you mind sharing your bread recipe? i enjoy making my own bread but seldom do anymore.

I make a bread that calls for 1/2 c honey per 2 loaves, too! And oatmeal. I'd rather use honey than sugar. We seldom buy store bread anymore, too.

notinoz, I'm experimenting with the flour ratios (whole wheat and white whole wheat) so let me crank out a batch this weekend to finalize it. It's my great aunt's recipe that I've been tweaking. Too much honey IMO and too dense. I'm trying to get it lighter without using white flour. Email me, will ya? To remind me? [email protected].

Arizonachicken, Mind sharing your recipe with oatmeal? I'd love to try that!

Thanks to everyone for their input (-: Here's hoping those gals lay more over the next week..i will set them with the rest and que sera, sera until candled on day @ 5-7.

I just found out my tax people have chickens. I knew they were good people, the have Great Danes, now to find out chickens, horses, orchard, garden and soon a vinard (small but large enough). How cool is that. Sence I have had my girls I am finding people in all walks of life having chickens, had chickens, and want them again. For most of them it is not just eggs, they enjoy them. Dust baths seem to be one thing people love to to watch, it is so relaxing.

I have been working harder then ever to get my garden down, but slower then ever. It is so aggravating. I am seeing a chiropractor, then take a mussel relaxer and do a little at a time. If I stop when it is painful, put packs on, then go back and work some more. I actually think it is helping me work out the mussel twitching. I am getting better, I think. But it is so, so, slow. I thank God that I have my garden and chickens to get me up each day looking forward to what shall come.

My fermented chicken food has moved into high gear, I can hear it bubbling a way. Has anyone ever made sourkrout? I will have to look that up. I love sourkrout. This morning my girls seemed really hungry, they dove in to their food, I had put soon dry in last evening, they had not touched it. You all were right, when they get used to it they prefer it.

My birds LOVE LOVE LOVE their fermented feed and are piggies. But I think they must know that we are relocating because they are saving up all their eggs.

you walk away for 11 hours and it takes a long time to catch up.

I'd love to have a couple of those BR and NHs.... Kathy sent me hatching eggs once, but every BR ended up being a roo and the one NH pullet I got ended up with a tumor on her head.

Someday....

I'm starting to suspect that Gallo is some sort of wizard or has made some sort of green-thumb pact with the devil.

HAHAHAHA! I've also suspected this since the aquaponic fish tank and hanging cucumber heaven LOL!

As for the drama lately in other threads.... I honestly just stay in this one, and information from old timers is better than any of that modern caplooey. .. Then again if I had my way I would live in the woods and never talk to people again lol!

Mahroni---hopefully I can set you up with a few pullet chicks...he notified me today he's sending 2 dozen of the NH's instead of a dozen...
oh man, the bator is gonna be full...and i don't have an auto turner...good thing i am a stay-at-home Mom....lol...Later on I will be getting his BR's (same as my pullets' breeding) for an Easter hatch (-;
