Arizona Chickens

There is actually a couple of jujubes that are self fertile. The ga 866 is the one I'm eyeballing. Suppose to be an early heavy producer and have far less thorns then the others. My 2 cents.

and where are you eyeballing this jujube? Where can you get it?

Maybe I'll talk to Reevis Mountain about getting some jujubes to try. I wonder if chickens like them?

Very helpful egg storage info. I am very new chicken mama in Phoenix. I am curious about the viability of eggs that are collected just once per day during the summer. Also, I am looking for a pair of Blue Andalusions pullets. My chicken family currently is 2 Australorps and 2 Barred Rocks.

So i need some help! I ordered 10 chicks from Ideal and sadly all of them except three of the filler males died within 24 hours. I called the woman there to ask for a re-shipment and she began to be very rude by telling me that i was a horrible caretaker and that i should never own chicks in my life. The sad part is that i could not figure out what was wrong and the hatchery was closed. So after being yelled at, i asked for my money back instead and was told that i was ridiculous and annoying. So now i will never again order from Ideal Poultry. But now i need chicks! Where is a good and reliable place for chicks? Thanks, Bryce

Oh phew on them... That person was just having a bad day.. Don't let that turn you off.. Anyone in the chicken business knows better..
All we can say is my pet chicken is where we orderd from.. With fabulous reviews from us... The person even made suggestions of what
type of bird to get. What color of egg the hen lay'd... They were so extremely helpful.. You can even call them with questions about chickens
Even if you don't order from them... They will still help you...
You could even look for a local breeder if you knew what you wanted.. Just hang out on this site & you will find something & people
to help... Right everyone

I had a terrible experience with Ideal as well, although I've heard a lot of people have done just fine ordering from them. The ducks I ordered last year were dead or died within a couple hours of arriving so I ended up getting new ducklings from Metzers, which were wonderful! All the chicks from Ideal survived but were incorrectly sexed and when I paid extra to have all pullets, I ended up with 7 roosters and only 5 hens!! I also was not treated nicely on the phone regarding the dead ducks but they did recently give me all my money back for all the roosters. However, I will not order from them again... this time I am going local. We have Olsen's Grain here and also Cal-Ranch and neither one of them use Ideal as their hatchery supplier. Everyone I've talked to that have purchased from either place has been very happy and has only ended up with one rooster every now and then. So... pretty good sexing accuracy. Where are you located in Arizona? Depending on where you are, people will be able to suggest good places to pick up chicks.
Also, could you share what you did once the chicks arrived? Were you able to get them from the post office as soon as they arrived there and immediately get them under a heat lamp with food and water? Not saying you did anything wrong - just wondering if they sat too long in transit or something?

Welcome from North Scottsdale. I own 7 silkies but far from being an expert on sexing them. Peanut has that slick back hair that says roo. My one silkie cackled and turned out to be a roo. From what I have learned,the hackle feathers down the neck is coarser than a pullets. Hen tend to be lower to the ground and roos stand more upright. Sold my roos and the couple asked if they could have a hen. SInce they came to me together, best to let them go together. You can see the streamers on the back of the crest. Sure sign of a roo. My new pullets and hens:

When I got my girls, I wanted to see them and pick them out after doing all the research I did. I went to several different feed stores in the area before I decided to buy.
Of course, the day I was ready to buy, the one store I went to didn't have the breeds I wanted. Off to the 2nd and then the 3rd store till I finally got the ones I wanted to
start with. One didn't make it to day 3. I felt terribly responsible due to me being a brand new chick mama. However, when I called the feed store I got it from, they
told me they got a bad batch of chicks in and they offered to replace that chick. Thankfully, no ill effects to the remaining chicks and the feed store kept their promise
and replaced the chick that died, free of charge. Hoping you find what you want very soon. Best of luck to you.

The Great Chicken Lift took place tonight. 21 (or is it 22?) five week old Black Java chicks have finally been moved from the brooder to the coop/run. Just in time!

Background: I had ordered 25 chicks in October for delivery this spring. Didn't have a definite delivery date but was expecting February. I built the brooder, which is outside, and got it more or less functional when we got that horrid cold spell in mid January. Great, I thought, I can experiment with the heating systems to see what works best. Two days later I got the call that the chicks had shipped. Yikes! (Haven't built the new coop yet.)

Chicks arrived January 16, the last day of the deep freeze. One was DOA. I am reasonably sure I counted 24 live chicks as I put them in the brooder. Had to cull three the first week because they weren't thriving. Which left (I thought) 21 chicks. In the meantime, I started frantic construction of a new hoop coop. Progress was slow.

Last week I converted my compost bin into a chick run attached to the side of the brooder to buy some extra time. I had put a chick-sized pop door on the brooder when I built it. The chick run doubled the space available to them and they liked being outside.

Finally got the hoop coop functional yesterday, and moved my five laying hens into it last night. (It's smaller than the other coop/run, so the layers get the hoop coop and the chicks get the old coop/run.) They seem to be settling in well. Got three eggs today out of five hens. So far, so good.

This morning I tried to move the chicks into their new, expansive quarters but all I succeeded in doing was triggering a stampede in the brooder. Gave up quickly and waited for dark.

Tonight I managed to move the chicks, three at a time, into their cushy new digs. Well, it was supposed to be three at a time. 21 chicks should have been seven trips with three birds apiece. Apparently one of the chicks cloned itself, or the neighbors sneaked a chick into my brooder when I wasn't looking. Because when I took the 21st bird out of the brooder I checked, and there was still one left! I have no idea where the extra chick came from. Apparently I've been counting wrong for the last 4 1/2 weeks.

Anyway, the chicks are in their new space. They aren't quite happy about it yet because it's dark and strange, but they are hunkered down in their bedding peeping quietly and peering around curiously when I check on them with the flashlight. It's gonna be like Christmas for them when morning comes, with all that space to explore. Too bad I won't be awake to see it! (ZZZzzzzzzzz...)
