So adorable!

Tonight is the girls first night in the big girls coop. I put the heat lamp in there cause its still kinda cold at night and they are only approaching 6 weeks. I keep checking on them am I paranoid? They're gonna be ok, right? Should I put their food and water in the coop part at night? They love being in the run and took their first real dust bath today!

They should be O.K. If you haven't tested the temps under the lamp at various times of the night, I'd check on them a couple times to make sure they aren't getting too cold. It's supposed to get down to 36 tonight here in Tucson. It sure is fun watching them explore their new world!

I will check the temp, and I believe its supposed to be about the same here in Casa Grande. I just hope they are smart enough to stay where its warm. I had a hard time getting them to stay in the coop, they really wanted to lay in the dirt!

Quote: NOAA is predicting 30 degrees tonight on my side of town. Same as they predicted for last night, when it got down to 27 here.

My chicks are a little over 6 weeks old and have been in the big coop/run for a week now. Their brooder was outside and I gradually backed off the heat in it before moving them. They've been fine in the coop with no heater. I gave them an upside down cardboard box with a bunch of pine shavings and straw to snuggle in, and a chick-sized access opening. It's a more protected space so they can huddle and keep warm. I have had to show them where it is. As it gets dark they gravitate out into the run area where it is lighter, and every night they end up in a pile in the corner by the door of the run. Yikes. So I pick them up one at a time and set them down at the entrance to the huddle box. Then they go in on their own. Once the nights are a little warmer I'll start putting them up on the roosts instead. Eventually they will catch on. I hope...

I took my son to that silly roadside attraction between Tucson and Phoenix; Rooster Cogburn's Ostrich Ranch. It was actually really awesome! An ostrich ate my camera. Proof:
TOO AWESOME! my son would love that.
queenrilly thank you. I was sure it was sugar and other sweets foods used. The homemade candy I had in Florida made with sweet rice gap had more then one sweetness to it. There is one dish I had fixed for me I have tried to duplicate, mine was not eatable, in fact I got sick from the stink the first time I tried, it was pork uterus. I had it in a soup and with different dipping sauces. It was very porky and full of flavor. The soup had other organ bits and tendon in it. I had a restaurant I would call 24 to 48 hours a head and their chief would surprise me with something NOT on the menu. I learned so much about what we are missing by our narrow tastes.
YES!I also completely mess up Chinese food at home if it calls for fish sauces and stuff... If you speak Chinese you can ask the waiters on the spot for real Chinese food too. Oh I love the place on... Camelback? And 35th (might be 43rd ave). The one with the live seafood.... Shark fin soup is to die for. And there's an AWESOME little Vietnamese place... I'm thinking 43rd but could also be 35th.. Lol I haven't lived in Glendale since 2010. North of northern... I dont remember the name so its not really worth mentioning, but their tendon pho is amazing. And their bun sandwiches... I need to go re-explore and find out all the names of places lol! I feel really sad that the Chinese visa in my passport is going to waste because we decided to have a baby and buy a house lol! So much food I'm missing! And at much better prices! Lol :) Mama - loving the duckie pics! CB - And all the baby pics with the tractor!

My only birds with a heat lamp are my New Years and mid Jan. chicks. I'll leave it on in the grow out pen until the end of March unless night time temps are in the 50s and then I'll turn it off.

Would it be better to place my coop on the side of my house that gets more shade? I thought it would be better for them in the summer, but in the winter the area would start to be shaded in the early afternoon. I have east/west exposure front of the house gets the west, backyard gets the east. Any insight would be helpful!
Shadiest/coolest area. Summer weather is much more an issue here than winter weather.
