Arizona Chickens

Great... Congrats ...

We are still talking about how fun it was at you home for the BBQ... & showing the scars from the tether ball game... What a blast
we had.. & your parents called our dearest friends to get the azomite... I guess she want to "1" up someone in their garden..
Our friends sell this exclusively.. It is suppose to be amazing.. I just got a bad not to long ago... They gave us instructions on
how to add it to our feed for the flock... Super vitamins!

Yeah, I saw the bag in my Mom's dining room the other day. I hadn't heard anything about adding it to the feed, though! That's a new one. But my Mom has a charcoal black thumb and can kill anything, so she has to have all the help she can get. We joke around that she killed a fake plant years ago. It sat up on the shelf for years, until she moved it cleaning. About a week later, my Dad had to move it and a leaf fell off. The only person I know that can kill a fake plant...

Scars, huh? I knew the tetherball game got really heated, but I don't recall any blood. Ah, but that's the best type of game. Rope burns, goose eggs and sprained fingers. The good ol' days! I'm so glad you could come, though. I'm looking forward to doing it again.

Well, incredibly bad timing. My 3 eggs I am sure are not going mot hatch. I worked hard, checking on temp, turning and humidity. They were growing. By day 10 one had died, stop growing. Then disaster, I was gone all day, the house temp went up.... So did my make shift incubator, the temp maxed out at 114 deg. And it is day 23 and no chick. Now! My Whenny has been spending more time in the coop. Most of yesterday and so fare today has not left.

dose this mean she is broody? Why couldn't she behaved like this 23 days ago? Should I get a dozen Trader Joe's fertile eggs? Should I, can I, and are they available, get Colombian Wyandotte eggs? How long do chickens stay broody? Now find the answers and make up my mind.

Still a work in progress, my coop is coming along. I put a chicken wire screen over the back access door so I can leave it open and they will give more ventilation, a new roosting stand, and need to fix a better ramp system to the coop. I would like it so I can clean it easily. Clare supervised the building of the roost, and tried it out serval times before I was finished with it. The plastic wrap in the back is my nephews hive, he dose not want my bees to sworn into his. He has ordered bees last year, before we decided my bees are healthy and gentle. I have to get mine pertly soon, and start thinking about moving my hive out from under my shed.

I figure if she had a friend her age they would do better with the bigger gals. Is there a pullet that gets along with her that you can put with her now? Then after a few days you can let them be with the rest of the flock.

X2 - either get her another friend or put one of the big girls in there with her that you know is nice to her...

Also, on the coop space - I've read a lot on here where they say even 2 square feet per bird for the coop is sufficient, 4 is just the best. It also makes a difference where you live and how much space they can run around in. The coop is mostly just for sleeping and laying... in Arizona, they do get to spend most of their time outside. In colder climates where they have to stay in for days and weeks on end, it would be better to have more space. Just my 2 cents... I think you would be just fine getting another one.

I decided to hit the feed store after work tomorrow and grab a black sex link 5week old. They're not open today or I would've done it already. She looks sad and wants out of the cage. I caught the rest of the flock sitting inside the coop just in front of her earlier today.

I don't see those sickle shaped feathers that roosters sport.  My money says it is a hen.  How old are they now?  Sometimes when you have a hen only flock, one of the hens gets kind of kinky and mounts lesser ranking hens.  My wife doesn't understand about that stuff; she thinks it is weird and disgusting.  I tell her to go back into the house and watch her television.

Frankly, I think a flock does better when there is a rooster.

Ok really? Will you define "better"? We are glad we have a Roo.. We are so egg cited to get new babies.. However not sure how many we will keep..

Oh yeah good scars... Mostly rug burns.. Bruises..Even the boys kept on saying how much fun they had..They want a tether ball now..
I would love to get one for our block... I would have to keep it in the driveway or on the street where a car would park.. So if anyone
knows someone that has a really good one.. let us know...

It would be best if you kept her in administrative segregation until she is of equal size. They will accept her if they can visually see her for long enough time. I have had hens of different generations that never really integrated. It works better if you have a rooster. He will break up fights and protect the lower ranking hens.

When I was young, we never mixed the breeds or generation of chickens. But, now that we don't have a lot of land, we do things a lot different.

Thanks. I'm going to get her a friend and keep them both separate for at least a week. She is visible to the flock.
