Arizona Chickens

And the tragedy continues. Two more were dead when we got home this afternoon. The heat lamp burned out, but the air conditioner was off, so it was a comfortable 85* inside today and none of the others are huddling like they're cold. Losing two yesterday and two so far today, I just switched over to Tylan instead of the Duramycin-10. And once again, it's not either of our two initial problem children: Twitchy or Gasper. They are still alive and well for the time being. I'm going to go ahead and leave the heat lamp off to see how they respond when it gets cooler tonight. It's time for them to go to the coop outside by the end of the weekend (Tuesday for me), assuming we stop losing them for no good reason.
ARRRGH. This is SO annoying. But I find it interesting jbolt was also having trouble with her Privett Hatchery birds - 8 of 30 lost on those vs. 2 of 100 on her home hatches? That echoes what I went through last spring when I raised 10 special-order Ideal chicks alongside about 25 Alohas, all born on the same day, raised on the same feed, in the same brooder box. I lost 8 of the 10 chicks from Ideal, and zero of the 25 ones that I'd hatched from my own eggs. It was weird.

Sounds like the weirdness continues this year with hatchery newborns. One thing is for sure, there certainly won't be any chicks freezing to death at this point. Boy is it hot out there!!

It was 101 to day, powder had a hard time laying was in the coop over 2 hrs. I kept checking on her. She started to make noise as she was breathing. I brought her inside, put her in an isolation cage I have, just incase one gets hurt. When she cooled down I put her back. (Yes she had water) I have a mister in the run, only one girl used it. She was the only one not panting. They haven't eaten much, spent most of the day under the water tanks. To marrow work on a misting system for a larger area.
WhenI lived just south of DEATH VALLEY the birds did not have a mister just a foot bath of water and that seemed to cool them down. I love being in N AZ not so much heat. My neighbor told me that he plans on moving to Phoenix when he retires. I asked he how he would tolerate the heat. I am in Bullhead City now. I hate the triple digit heat !

I think it may have to do with little to no bio security at the retail stores where the chicks are sold. So many coming in each week, along with other fowl in the stores, people with poo on their shoes, ect. I just know that I will bite the extra cost and hatch my own local eggs, and buy from small local breeders. I love the availability of the shipped chicks, but can't stomach the losses. 32$ in wasted money for chicks. That's a bag and a half of flock raiser.........

I am in the nw valley, and am looking for a red, or partridge silkie roo with a straight comb. Obviously it will be crossbred so bigger the better. I will pay up to 10 dollars for said roo, and he will be very needed in my breeding pen. Don't laugh, my mutts are beautiful! Lol, he will be used to try and make a couple silkie alohas......oooooooooo I have just enough room for this silly project, and I thing orange mottled silkies with straight combs, would just be the deco my yard needs. Btw, please don't discourage me by telling me its going to take bazillions of gens to get what I want. I'm just playing with it on a hobby scale, and I need good Broodys so no matter what they look like that will be their job. Please pm me if you have a boy for me :)

:thumbsup go for it, have fun. So what if there is a lot to it, you may end up with a mix sport, that is outstanding and breeds true. And have the new line named after you. When you dream, dream big, but always mind-filled it is a dream. :hugs

It was a pretty comfortable 100* up here today. I can't come remotely close to saying it was too hot. That doesn't hit until it's 117* or more. I spent the entire day working on the new coop and got quite a bit more done. I'm doing a couple of make-shift patches for tonight so that I can my big girls in it and move the chicks out to the brooder coop. I'll have to put the light on out there, since it's supposed to be 68* tonight, but that's still not too bad.

Better get back to it before night overtakes me!

Oh crud.

Whack it good.

I hadn't closed the girls in the coop since they learned how to coop themselves at night. Well, tonight, I shut the door. I'm sure they'll be pretty anxious to get out in the morning. Good thing I get up early every day.

Hello hot temp coops! Has anyone had experience with installing swamp coolers in the coop? Just curious...thinking about doing it, if the results are positive.

I think it would be great if you can find one with a fairly low speed. I can picture chickens getting their feathers blown off standing in front of the vent to stay cool if it's on high. I have a small window unit in my garage and I never use the high setting, it's too much and too loud. I use the low setting when I'm out there brewing in the summer.

I'm pretty sure Mikey D had an evaporative cooler. Well, the cool air from his house swamp cooler opened directly into his coop through a window. I seem to recall that he was going to add a window unit, but I'm not sure if he did or not. I'm a big fan of planting things to provide shade, do you have space to plant a tree?
