ARRRGH. This is SO annoying. But I find it interesting jbolt was also having trouble with her Privett Hatchery birds - 8 of 30 lost on those vs. 2 of 100 on her home hatches? That echoes what I went through last spring when I raised 10 special-order Ideal chicks alongside about 25 Alohas, all born on the same day, raised on the same feed, in the same brooder box. I lost 8 of the 10 chicks from Ideal, and zero of the 25 ones that I'd hatched from my own eggs. It was weird. And the tragedy continues. Two more were dead when we got home this afternoon. The heat lamp burned out, but the air conditioner was off, so it was a comfortable 85* inside today and none of the others are huddling like they're cold. Losing two yesterday and two so far today, I just switched over to Tylan instead of the Duramycin-10. And once again, it's not either of our two initial problem children: Twitchy or Gasper. They are still alive and well for the time being. I'm going to go ahead and leave the heat lamp off to see how they respond when it gets cooler tonight. It's time for them to go to the coop outside by the end of the weekend (Tuesday for me), assuming we stop losing them for no good reason.
Sounds like the weirdness continues this year with hatchery newborns. One thing is for sure, there certainly won't be any chicks freezing to death at this point. Boy is it hot out there!!
