Arizona Chickens

Party went well. Was held at McCormick Ranch Train Park. Of course we had the triple digits!!!

Put a test tube in the smoke stack. Added water and dry ice. Cooper loved it.

Looks like a great time was had by all regardless of triple digits.
Looks so festive and the birthday boy is adorable.
We have one grandson. He asked me to make him a
scooby doo cake. I had no idea how. I took cake decorating classes
and the first cake I made was his scooby doo cake. He loved it.

It was much less involved than yours. You should have your own
specialty cake business.

Recently, my grandson told me it was Dr. Seuss' birthday. I asked
him what he wanted for breakfast and he said "Cat in the hat pancakes".
I didn't know how to do that either, but we sure had fun trying. My cake
decorating classes gave me the encouragement I needed.

Pretty simple but he thought I was a magician!!!

The cat in the hat turned out great. Your grandson is a handsome young man.I learned cake decorating when I worked at Baskin-Robbins many many years ago. I do like making cakes and cupcakes for occasions. I think if I had to do this as a real job, it wouldn't be as fun.

Saw a coyote in my backyard for the first time ever. I opened the back door to go give the girls some morning treats (cabbage) and there the mangy F-er was. It lit out of there pretty quick when I walked out. Dyna is gonna go apey when she smells it. Those are her chickens and no one is going to eat them but her.

I keep a pellet gun on the porch. I wish the critter had stuck around for a minute, I would have tagged him between the eyes.

oh Mama Hen, i have to disagree!!!!!!!!! being a pastrychef is the best job EVER!!!!!!! except if you work in a huge resort and it's thanksgiving, christmas, easter, mothers' day, fathers' day, etc.

That's the spirit! Well done.

That is awesome! I love it!.

That is awesome, its just what I needed to help me along with my design.  Ventilation has been holding me back but that gave me the ideas I needed.  Thanks!  Do you have any interior pics?

Very nice job!  I love all the ventilation.  What kind of wire did you use?  I too want to see interior pictures.  :pop

Great coop.. Love all the opening for them in the summer. Also the two level roof.. Thank you for posting the photos..

I really love your coop. All the air circulation. Do you or are you going to build panels to put over the ventilation space for winter? We have only a few months of Arizona cold weather and a few weeks of winter cold weather. From what I read and seen wind and rain is what they need shelter from. (Other then predictors)

I am very interested in your plans. I posted a few switches of my idea. I would love to barrow a little of your design.

as you can see, I have only the basic frame for the coop. It is to face East. The nesting box is facing West. Because of the hot sun I am going to put some insulation only on the nesting boxes. Primarily the top, and a little in the access door. The bottom I may dig out a little, a chicken summer house. Only halve of the run will have a roof cover, the rest netting or shade cloth. I wish I could afford to put up sail shades.

Heidisue, I'm so impressed. And a little envious, it is so nice. :love

OOH!  I love it!  I love seeing people's coop pictures, everyone goes about them a little differently, it's neat to see.  I like yours, it looks like a miniature rustic cabin somewhere up in Greer.  Except, you know, very airy.  Very nice!

Thanks guys :) I went crazy with ventilation. My dad visited us this winter and wanted to do some projects so the chicken coop was one of the results. He can build and took the ideas I had further. The two tier roof was his idea - it should give a place for the hot air to escape so it doesn't get trapped under the roof.

I used hardware cloth everywhere (under the coop as well). I was building for coyotes, neighborhood dogs that get in my yard, and LOTS of hawks/owls. I even saw a golden eagle sitting in our yard last week :) I was hoping to keep it under $400, but I added the roof and used all hardware cloth b/c of the predators so I went over. The shades/awnings are because I had a little extra roofing and I didn't want to waste anything!

I left the side of the coop open (facing the run):

Sorry it's so dark. The roost is on the right, egg box on the right. There are two nipple waterers that feed into the coop and three below in the run.

I do not have covers for the windows, but I could build them if I need to :) we went through a few good wind storms already and there are a few places they can escape it. Ill have to see how arizona winter weather goes.
