Arizona Chickens

I bet Cooper loved his train cake! Very nice!

I did a really cool Jack and the Beanstalk cake once upon a time...long, long ago. And several dragon cakes...the White Rabbit (from Alice in Wonderland)...crocodile (from Peter Pan)...figure 8 race track...Tigger...just don't ask me to do fancy schmancy icing decor...that is beyond me. So...there are a few ideas for next year...

http://www.amazon.com/The-Childrens-Party-Handbook-Fantasy/dp/0812047478 has some great ideas
When he saw it he said Choo Choo!! That is a good book to have. We shall see what his theme is next year!

It was 101 to day, powder had a hard time laying was in the coop over 2 hrs. I kept checking on her. She started to make noise as she was breathing. I brought her inside, put her in an isolation cage I have, just incase one gets hurt. When she cooled down I put her back. (Yes she had water) I have a mister in the run, only one girl used it. She was the only one not panting. They haven't eaten much, spent most of the day under the water tanks. To marrow work on a misting system for a larger area.

I promised pics of my coop and I keep forgetting! I read this post everyday though :) I haven't posted how we built it yet, hoping to that here and/or my blog but we'll see! Here is the end result:

I honestly think they hatch too many chicks to help them out of their shells.

I agree with you :) I used to work in ecotoxicology and we hatched out quail and ducks. It was very scheduled and I would guess a large hatchery would be the same way. We sometimes hatched thousands of birds. If one was close to the deadline we might help it, but helping one that wasn't close didn't really do anything for the poor bird. We could pick out the sicklys pretty fast, part of working with so many. We would watch them closer.

I would guess its the traveling. Huge stressor. When we had little ones delivered it was not considered odd to lose a full 10% (and it could get higher). The stress was different than the normal day olds - not eating is okay b/c of the yolk sac, but it still is better to eat quick. Then you have the movement and temperatures - lots of variables.

That is awesome, its just what I needed to help me along with my design. Ventilation has been holding me back but that gave me the ideas I needed. Thanks! Do you have any interior pics?

Very nice job! I love all the ventilation. What kind of wire did you use? I too want to see interior pictures.

I really love your coop. All the air circulation. Do you or are you going to build panels to put over the ventilation space for winter? We have only a few months of Arizona cold weather and a few weeks of winter cold weather. From what I read and seen wind and rain is what they need shelter from. (Other then predictors)

I am very interested in your plans. I posted a few switches of my idea. I would love to barrow a little of your design.

as you can see, I have only the basic frame for the coop. It is to face East. The nesting box is facing West. Because of the hot sun I am going to put some insulation only on the nesting boxes. Primarily the top, and a little in the access door. The bottom I may dig out a little, a chicken summer house. Only halve of the run will have a roof cover, the rest netting or shade cloth. I wish I could afford to put up sail shades.

Heidisue, I'm so impressed. And a little envious, it is so nice. :love

OOH! I love it! I love seeing people's coop pictures, everyone goes about them a little differently, it's neat to see. I like yours, it looks like a miniature rustic cabin somewhere up in Greer. Except, you know, very airy. Very nice!
