Thank you for posting all the broody/chick pictures! I haven't been able to spend a whole lot of time with my broody or her chicks. DH has been taking care of the animals and garden for me. I'll be out if commission for at least 8 weeks. I'm staying with my sister and my mom is down here staying with us, too. They are taking great care of me. I go back home for visits, but spend all my time with my kiddos and DH. I need a nanny! DH is starting to go loco.

Ok az, I am stumped.....about 2 weeks ago I hatched out a batch of eggs. Some were local, a few we're some trader joes fertile eggs, and some of my own backyard mixes. I had 30 chicks hatch. All but 1 late one thrived, and were doing fine. 2 days ago 2 chicks were gasping for air. Their crops were empty, and 15 minutes after I noticed them gasping, the flopped around violently and died. The same happened with one this morning. All other chicks seem fine. No gasping, eating and drinking well, and clean butts, no diarrhea . I am stumped. These were not weak chicks. They were not skinny, or lethargic. Temp was good in brooder, so I don't think it was heat related. I have another batch of eggs in the bator and am terrified that I have something dangerous happening here. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Believe it or not, there are 15 chicks under this big broody plus some eggs that she is sitting tight on!!!

Since we had the strong Santa Ana winds all day yesterday and the pool was chocked full of twigs, leaves and yellow blossoms, (and I spent HOURS cleaning this pool) I had to capture this moment in time when it looks pristine. Water temp is 74... perfect!

Garden... lots of squash, both zucchini and yellow crookneck, tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, and strawberries with the run in the background and coop in the back right corner.

Eloise, my EE who just started laying HUGE Green eggs.

Two of my five polish girls. These are the only two laying. The other Buff laced has no wattles, just a beard.

OK, you breed experts, is she a Delaware or a Columbian Rock? She is HUGE and just started laying small dark brown eggs.

Another pic of mama.. she just has to stay tight on those last few eggs until Monday night. Think she'll make it? If not she's got the fifteen chicks to care for and she is such an attentive mother for a first time broody. (Black Copper Olive Egger)

Part of the laying flock. From L to R. Lefty (PW Leghorn), Red, Delene, Mary (BCMarans), Barbara, Buffy, Eloise and Lacy.
Very nice, I hope you don't mind if we take some names from your flock.. I like Barbara, Eloise, lacy, & darlene.. & of course Button from MaddBaggins.. I did the same the other day.. I took a photo of our garden.. It does help to enjoy that moment... I can't wait to post some photos...

I got some fertile eggs to put under my broody hen from Mary Hysong, and she was generous enough to let me have 17. I only gave my broody 8, since she's pretty little, so I've got 9 fertile eggs that can go in a incubator or under a broody. If you are interested, PM me and I can let someone have them for free, if you can get them in the next day or two. They are all green or blue-green , laid by EEs who are covered by a EE roo and a Welsummer roo, so you could get a mix of olive, green and maybe even a true blue.

In my Humble opinion chicks die. Not all chicks are going to live. I don't think anything is going wrong, these chicks just weren't thriving. That is why when I read that a person boasted that he never lost a chick I didn't believe him. It is natures way. You did a good job hatching all you did.

We've been working solid yesterday and today. With just my husband and I working alone, it's just been slow going and piecemeal. But I've really been making a push to get it finished this weekend. We had a little help from one of my friends yesterday. And then thankfully our neighbor came over today and put it a few hours work. So much takes so long that you wouldn't think takes so long. But we're getting there. Fingers crossed we finish this weekend! I think it about 50/50 at this point...

Love your pics. Great pristine pool and garden. Can't believe she's setting on all those babies plus eggs.

I am guessing your hen is a Columbian as my Delaware didn't look as dark.
