So here is what I thought I was picking up...

And here is part of the extras that I got... The hive on the left is a starter hive. You use it when you first order a block of bees and let them get settled. They have to have a smaller hive because the bees regulate the temperature inside the hive, so if there aren't enough bees, the temperature fluctuates too much. The hive on the right has the base, then a brooding chamber and several supers for the honey. I have to full sets for the big hive, including the Queen divider.

There are quite a few frames, probably enough to fill every super with a few spares. They all have the honeycomb already intact and ready to go. This makes it more suitable for capturing a swarm and starting a colony to thrive.

Ok yeah really cool.. I would love to do that.. We have a rental property in east Mesa, half an acre.. That would be a perfect
place for them... We plan on retiring out there.. Possibly by then I could do it.. I will be day dreaming about them all night..

I was kneeling . You get good pics when you are level with the critters. Also I sat the camera on the sand to snap some pics.

Super Cute!!!!

So I put the 15 chicks under the broody just before 8PM so it's been over two hours.

I'm headed out to check on them one more time before I hit the sac.

I hope she takes to them. They all cuddled under her and made very little noise.

The one or two eggs that could possibly hatch aren't due until Monday, but when I candled this evening, I don't give them much hope. I did take one egg that was an obvious quitter and put it in the garbage.

She has been such a DILIGENT broody.. She is a Blue Copper Olive egger and was heavy 3 weeks ago but setting on eggs full time has taken it's toll and she seems kind of light now.

Pics in the AM!!!

15 chicks from MO arrived safe and sound and ready to go under a broody mama tonight. 14 Heritage Delawares and a Silver Laced Wyandotte... all drinking and eating and pooping in the Laree brooder.
CONGRATS Dar!!!

Kathy and I have the some of the same strains of NH's and GSBR's from Jwhip in Nebraska. Those Dels should be some real nice birds, no doubt. You may need to check out the Heritage Large Fowl thread here on BYC....great thread for those with "H" birds...I've learned alot since there's some well known and ' ol timer' breeders subscribed.

Fantastic. I have been going out once a day to chick on new hive sugar water w/vitamins and the starter pollen cake. I like hoping out at night or pre down, they don't fly. Today I checked about mid-afternoon. They were just as non-interested in me as at night. It is to bad she is afraid. If I let fear stop me I wouldn't have any fun. My nephew will call me for the Dayley bee report, I happily fallow his instructions, they are his bees. I will share in the honey, and I am learning. He has had bees before, but as with most people he has forgotten a lot. Reading and doing is bringing it all back.

Bees can smell fear, they also do not like human sweaty body odor. That is why I shower after working out side before chucking on the bees. I was working in the corner were my bees are all day a week or so ago. It was late afternoon, I was starting to get rip, all I had to do is put one screw in. My bees greeted me as I started to work, they where also starting to get loader. I put down my drill and left. A couple of them road on me to almost my door, if any on my back I do not know. I did not get stung, they were just interested.

I know I've been missing for ever. Been tending the microfarm. I put in a small garden, have started raising quail but have come to realize that the flies are out of control and remembered that I learned on here that muscovy ducks take care of that for us. So, while hubby is working in DC I am wanting to get about 3-4 muscovy ducklings. Does anyone have any up for sale or hatching this week? I have a few broody hens sitting on some easter egger eggs. I'd like one of them to raise the ducklings and the other to raise the chicks. If you have any, would you please PM me? I live in East Mesa and willing to drive about 40 miles one way to get them. The chicks are due to hatch on the 9th so any time before that would be great.
I have a white silkie sitting on duck eggs but they are Pekin/Rouen mix... and not due until around the 21st. You might want to check on the duck forum as there are lots of muscovy owners on there.
Oh what a beautiful morning.....
Love all your pics as usual!

Believe it or not, there are 15 chicks under this big broody plus some eggs that she is sitting tight on!!!

Since we had the strong Santa Ana winds all day yesterday and the pool was chocked full of twigs, leaves and yellow blossoms, (and I spent HOURS cleaning this pool) I had to capture this moment in time when it looks pristine. Water temp is 74... perfect!

Garden... lots of squash, both zucchini and yellow crookneck, tomatoes, peppers, cauliflower, and strawberries with the run in the background and coop in the back right corner.

Eloise, my EE who just started laying HUGE Green eggs.

Two of my five polish girls. These are the only two laying. The other Buff laced has no wattles, just a beard.

OK, you breed experts, is she a Delaware or a Columbian Rock? She is HUGE and just started laying small dark brown eggs.

Another pic of mama.. she just has to stay tight on those last few eggs until Monday night. Think she'll make it? If not she's got the fifteen chicks to care for and she is such an attentive mother for a first time broody. (Black Copper Olive Egger)

Part of the laying flock. From L to R. Lefty (PW Leghorn), Red, Delene, Mary (BCMarans), Barbara, Buffy, Eloise and Lacy.
